How this ultra-rare 1969/1970 Sam Cooke album came about, we honestly have no idea. As most Sam Cooke collectors know, the original Sam Cooke recordings on KEEN label (1957-1960) do NOT exist in true stereo, with one notable exception (his 1959 “Tribute to a Lady” album), plus a few later Keen singles.

Well, what we have here are not only classic KEEN songs in TRUE STEREO – but – get this: different arrangements of these same classic Sam Cooke songs, unavailable anywhere else – before or after this album – in more than 30 years.

At first we thought that this was some kind of dubious issue, possibly a counterfeit pressing or bootleg of some sort, possibly some other artist masquerading as Sam Cooke. But no, the voice is unmistakably that of Sam Cooke. No mistake there. And then, the inscription on both label and Cover identifies Cherrie label as a perfectly legitimate subsidiary of KENT records (Kent records became famous in the mid-60’s by issuing classic BB King, Lowell Fulsom and Elmore James albums; the label has impeccable legal credentials).

The only two possible explanation we have is this: either the original multi-track tapes from Sam Cooke’s KEEN sessions do actually exist and were preserved for posterity, in which case what we have here is a re-mixed version of these great soul songs – OR – someone took the original master tapes, extracted Sam Cooke’s voice on one channel, and completely re-worked and re-recorded the orchestral arrangements on the other channel). You be the judge. In any event , these songs do not sound like anything you have heard from Sam Cooke before.

Whatever the case, the absence of obtrusive and oppressive string arrangements that some of the early Sam Cooke material is known to suffer from, is palpable. No string-drenched arrangements here. Only the pure, 100% soul, mostly with small combo (and, YES, with original Sam Cooke studio band headed by Renee Hall) in action: the way Sam Cooke should have sounded all along, but was never given a chance to.

Bidder should note that the album includes ultra-rare 45rpm bonus “interview” disc. Finding a still sealed original copy?!?! Forget it – not even a HOPE!!! This may be the last one you will ever see.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(a)            THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).

(b)            THE ALBUM INCLUDES THE ORIGINAL BONUS 45 SINGLE RECORD (“RAP SESSION: SAM COOKE IN STUDIO c/w RAP SESSION: THE INTERVIEW”).

(c)             The records are apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the very first pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, exceedingly vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from your compact disc!

(d)            PLEASE NOTE: This - of course - is an ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital, newly mastered recording!!!
