Call this a labor of love, if you will: advertising the music and the vibrant, joyful voice of my all- time favorite singer - and spreading the Sam Cooke gospel in the process !!! That's heaven to me, indeed. Sam Cooke was the greatest American singer of all times, hands down; no ifs, ands or buts. Respectfully, the fans of Enrico Caruso, Frankie Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat "King" Cole or Billy Ecstine can take their case elsewhere - my judgment is final (and also shared by such an authority as Jerry Wexler, legendary Atlantic A&R man, who - to paraphrase his words - proclaimed that Sam Cooke was a "perfect" singer, who "had it all"). In an unlikely event that you are totally unfamiliar with Sam's music, this is the THIRD album he recorded for RCA Victor, in 1962 AND PROBABLY THE SINGLE RAREST RCA SAM COOKE ALBUM. Sam covers 12 folk songs and Stephen Foster-era traditionals, so much in vogue back in the early 60's folk revival movement. Ah, but wait?there's a swing to it?a REAL swing, that is. Sam doesn't only sing lame folk songs, he swings through them with a swagger, Bobby Darin-style, and the combination does wonders. This is the only album in existence where you will find Sam Cooke's (much sought after) renditions of songs such as "Grandfather's Clock" and "Pray" plus his own version of the interlude from Dvorak's "New World Symphony" now re-done as a Gospel song: "Going Home" (believe it or not, it is probably the finest song on the album - Sam sings this elegy/lullaby/eulogy with uncanny grace and taste). This album has been unavailable in any way, manner or format - anywhere - in almost 45 years. Miss it an weep.
Track listing: Swing low, sweet chariot - I'm just a country boy - They call the wind Maria - Twilight on the trail - If I had you - Chain Gang - Grandfather's clock - Jeanie with the light brown hair - Long, long ago - Pray - You belong to me - Goin' home.
"RCA Living Stereo" recordings - mostly classical, but also a handful of pop and easy listening titles - were made under the supervision of the most knowledgeable technicians and engineers on earth. The sound is simply amazing. On mint or near mint copies , quiet passages are so quiet - and the surface noise so conspicuously absent - that you will not even realize that your stylus has hit the surface of the record until the music starts. The highs are high, and the lows are very low. You are going to need a subwoofer and a hypersensitive tweeter to express some of these tonal ranges appropriately. This is the music for the ears, heart, soul, mind and guts alike.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions ? mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is STILL in its original poly-lined stock inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(c) The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).
(d) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
(f) Stereo pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies by a ratio of at least 5:1.
