..... This album was produced by jazz legend Bob Thiele, and mastered by Rudy Van Gelder (his stamp is in the trail-off) .. San Francisco psychedelic band Salvation was formed in 1967 by singer Al Linde and guitarist Joe Tate, who first met while students at the University of Washington. Bassist Artie McLean, keyboardist Art Resnick, and drummer Teddy Stewart later completed the original lineup, which at first called itself the New Salvation Army Banned. After earning featured spots in a series of concerts in Golden Gate Park, the band signed to ABC Records, albeit on the condition they abbreviate their name for fear of legal action from the actual Salvation Army. Salvation's self-titled debut LP followed in 1968, boasting an expansive, eclectic sound highlighted by the first single, "Think Twice." Opening slots for bands for The Doors, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Canned Heat followed, and around the time of their second album, 1969's Gypsy Carnival Caravan, Salvation traveled to New York City to headline the Fillmore East and the Village Gate. But their future was jeopardized after the group's management reputedly ran off with their ABC advance, and in 1970 Salvation dissolved; Resnick later resurfaced in jazz circles with a handful of solo recordings as well as sideman dates behind Nat Adderly, Freddie Hubbard, and others.

This San Francisco band was formed when former harpoon sharpener and garbage collector at the University of Washington Seattle, Al Linde, met Joe Tate, a cesspool driver and former student at the School of Mining and Minerology. Joe later met the group's drummer, Teddy Stewart, outside a bar in Sausalito. The other two members joined later. The band were featured in a series of three concerts in Golden Gate Park and eventually ABC offered them a recording contract.

The first LP, released by United Artists in the UK, reflects the spontaneity of their music. Its front cover shows the converted bus they moved around in! The songs on the album are all originals ranging from hard rock songs like She Said Yeah and Cinderellato to good time songs like The Village Shuck, What Does An Indian Look Like? and the psychedelic Think Twice...

Art Resnick recalls:- "I was the last to join the band in the Spring of '68. That Summer in San Francisco was, as you know, the apex of the times and everything that the hippy generation represented (and more) was happening in the streets of Haight Ashbury. I had hitched a ride from Minnesota to SF and got dropped off on some corner near H.A. where I stepped into a phone booth to call the one phone number I had on a piece of paper. This had been given to me by my ex-University of Iowa buddy, David Sanborn. He was supposed to be hanging out there and maybe playing around town. It was the number of Teddy, the drummer of the New Salvation Army Banned. When I called, this guy (turned out to be Al the lead singer) picked up the phone and I asked for David. In the background there was a very loud rock band playing so after shouting the name David Sanborn a few times he finally said David had been there but was out of town with Paul Butterfield and who was I?"

"I told him I was a keyboardist from Minneapolis who had just arrived and David was the only person I knew. He said that they were a band on the scene and their keyboard player had, 'that morning', packed up his gear and moved back to Minnesota where he came from! Weird. Anyway, he invited me over and it turns out they occupied a house right on Fredrick & Haight, within walking distance. When I arrived I was escorted in through a hallway into a room that was filled with posters and blacklight with two guys, each talking in one of my ears at the same time. Thus began my sojourn with the band. The rest is a somewhat history of Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll, and, oh yeah, ripoffs in New York's Filmore East... There's some really funny stories about that, like getting busted by the NYC police right on stage in the middle of a set, for non-payment of the hotel room (which is when our management team decided to take off with our advance from ABC Impulse). Anyway that's another story."

"The band started out as The New Salvation Army Banned and the name change was made because the record company was afraid of being sued by Colonel Hartog of the Salvation Army, SF chapter. It was changed when we signed our contract (which ABC later broke, although they did have good reason)."

"All of our gigs that Summer in San Francisco were notable since we were on the second echelon right beneath Big Brother, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, etc. We played gigs being the warmup act (or following) all of the great bands. One time when we played for The Doors at the Winterland Arena when they came out and sat down on the stage in front of a TV and watched themselves on the 'Tonight' Show with Johnny Carson (I think, could be wrong about that - but it was some major network show ***Editor's note->probably was the Smothers Brothers Show as that was their only network appearance in 1968) before a fully packed house of thousands. We also played the Avalon Ballroom with Chuck Berry, Janis Joplin, The Doors, and hosts of others."

"We also played, as part of a promo tour for our first album (which was incidentally produced by the way by Bob Theile - the producer of John Coltrane on all his ABC Impulse recordings) the Fillmore East and the Village Gate which was billed as from the Golden Gate to the Village Gate...."

"What destroyed the band was the fact that our managers left us high and dry in NYC, without a penny, absconding with our advance money (I think it was $10,000 if I'm not mistaken). Also, and probably the biggest reason for our gradual demise, is that members of the band acted so incredibly wild at the main offices of ABC in NYC when going there to meet all the top execs. It was totally insane! Wilder than any rock movie I've ever seen."

"The most exciting gig I can remember was the gig we played in front of over 10,000 fans at the Malibu Rock Festival. They were mostly high on acid and other psychedelic mixures, and there we were on stage, outside in the sunny California afternoon, just following Canned Heat.... Seems like a dream now, but the feelings never die."

Teddy Stewart is thought to have become a postman in San Francisco. Art Resnick (aka U.S. Of Arthur) went on to record 12 albums, some solo, and some with rather well known jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Nat Adderly, Freddy Hubbard, Bobby Shew, etc. He was not the same guy as in Third Rail...
