Background

Over the next 12-18 months I’ll be selling off a massive collection of records (5000+) from a shop which shut it’s doors in the early 1980s.  The collection covers a period from the late 1960s through to the time of the shop’s closure (with odd bits of a slightly earlier date) and includes large quantities of 60s/70s rock, progressive, R & B, soul and modern classical music.  Most of the items are unplayed (or at most sustained a single play) unless otherwise noted.  You don’t get many opportunities to purchase unplayed 70s shop stock anymore!  This short paragraph of background information will be included whenever an item has been sourced from this collection.

UNSOLD SHOP STOCK ORIGINAL U.K. 1969 Black/Silver Label Chess/Pye pressing of Rotary Connection’s ‘Songs’ L.P. (Catalogue Reference: CHESS STEREO CRLS.4551).  This is a stunning copy and like with the bulk of the records I have for sale it is highly unlikely you’ll find a superior copy (I’m getting a little bored saying this).  This vinyl copy has only been played a couple of times at most.  The vinyl is conservatively graded as being in EXCELLENT+ condition.  Limited hairline scratches are visible on both sides but only under an intense light.  The sleeve is beautiful with ‘fresh’ looking laminate which could be NEW and a rear as white and unhandled as you are going to find.  I should say it is still a flip back design.  Again, this is an easy EXCELLENT+ grading (more condition details below).

Flip back L.P. Cover

This is simply a beautiful looking example of this flip back sleeve and it is graded as being in EXCELLENT+ condition.  The laminate has a ‘fresh’ look to it which tells you this hasn’t been handled much.  There are a couple of light creases around the opening edge and creasing long the spine (although not extensive enough to have resulted in bubbles in the laminate).  There is minimal fraying to the opening edge and each corner has received a light knock.  I also note a very light yellowing of the opening edge of the sleeve which isn’t evident elsewhere.  These points are minor and the rear of the sleeve is as white as the day this was manufactured.  I can’t see how a nicer copy exists.

Vinyl

This is stored in the original PYE poly-lined inner (which is plain white) and is conservatively graded as being in EXCELLENT+ condition.  I can tell this copy has been played however, the labels don’t belie this fact as they are absolutely immaculate.  This is a CHESS black and silver label pressing which is nice.  The 70s labels were nowhere near as classy.  Under an intense light there are limited hairline scratches on both sides.  Really there is nothing else to say.  You’re never going to feel the need to upgrade this copy.

Concluding Remarks

This is for someone who wants simply the best copy you are ever likely to find and I’d keep it myself if I had the space!  PYE was never big on L.P. pressings and accordingly this is pretty rare.  Please check my other auctions for further items in similarly immaculate condition from the same source.  Save me as a Favourite Seller as there is plenty more good stuff where this came from!
