Up for auction, this ridiculously rare 45 single is a collectors dream, for both collectors of the Rolling Stones and the British music industry. Probably the only known copy, this one sided acetate, written & also recorded by Jagger & Richards of the Rolling Stones, suggests that the vocalist(s) were known by the group and possibly written with them in mind; although this is purely speculative.
Regent Sound Ltd, situated at 4. Denmark Street, London, England, was a small recording studio, operating in the early 60’s and a local hang-out for up and coming groups, including the Stones, which offered these artists a chance to record their music. Normally, a handful of demos would be pressed and handed to a runner, who would offer them to an established label in the hope of being signed. This particular version asks the question as to who recorded it first. Whoever gave the nod to record this obviously had faith and invested not only time but expense in its production, compared to the Stones version. For a start, this version is 30 seconds longer and sounds like it is accompanied by a larger group of musicians, which in turn boasts a richer sound. On first hearing this I assumed it was recorded by a female, although it is possible that the vocal could be that of a young male, especially in light that the lyrics are the same on both versions and not altered to accommodate a female perspective. However, we are talking the swinging 60’s so who knows! The fact that this version has survived is a small miracle, due to it almost being thrown out. Thankfully I had the sense to research this after buying a battered box of singles at a boot sale a few years ago. Until then I was unaware that the Stones had written, let alone recorded it. The artists name is not credited and remains a complete mystery. In a flight of fancy, I would like to believe, due to the content of the lyrics, that it was written for either Mick’s or Keith’s woman at the time.
The condition of this item is as follows;
Label- Regents Sound Ltd. Yellow with green lettering. The words “We were Falling in Love” written on the label. Label is attached but loose and has the residue of tape across it, which at some point will have held it on. Various small blemishes and fading to the label. Small parts of the label missing on the outer edge and around the spindle hole (see pictures)
Acetate- Playing side- Small nibble 6mm across x less than 1mm into the edge of the disc, revealing what looks like some sort of metal possibly aluminium. This can also be seen inside the spindle hole. The playing surface is covered in tiny hairlines, marks, scuffs and tiny scratches (too many to catalogue) but retains full lustre. Various scuffs and marks on both the run-on and run-off grooves. There are no matrix marks that I can see although the run-off groove is pretty marked.
Acetate- Non playing side- This side is completely smooth and has thousands of tiny marks, blemishes, scratches & scuffs. I have used a flash on the picture to highlight this.
Playing condition is good and plays in its entirety with hiss and background noise with no skips or jumps. The full version can be heard on YouTube (alternative female/ male vocal) Overall this is a good, honest & genuine item, sold in good faith by a gentleman.
