Beggars Banquet LP Toilet Graffiti Cover Slick
US Cover Proof , London Stereo PS 539
EXTREMELY RARE
A 1968 copy of Beggars Banquet PS 539 that featured the original toilet graffiti cover slick (not on a cover / no record cover), weighs in at $10,000.00 US dollars. In new mint condition, according to Goldmine's standard catalog of American records.
The cover was originally done by Los Angeles creative types Tom Wilkes, Michael Vosse and Barry Feinstein, with Mick and Keith, who did the graffiti on the back cover.
The photo was taken by Barry Feinstein in a tiny bathroom at a Porsche repair shop above Hollywood Boulevard and Cahuenga Boulevard.
Of the second photo shoot Michael Vosse said, the designers brought Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to the site, but did not tell them how vile this bathroom was. There was about an inch and a half of thick dark liquid on the floor and the boys arrived in velvet suits and expensive Italian shoes and waded into the muck. The front cover having already been photographed, the designers gave Mick and Keith crayons and felt pens and they wrote the album songs, credits and everything else on the wall to shoot the back cover of the album.
One of the obvious clues that the photo was taken at a mechanic shop bathroom, is the Champion sticker on the toilet seat.
The Rolling Stones loved the cover, but Decca in the UK and London in the USA refused to issue it. After months of arguing, the Stones gave in and went with the simple "white invitation cover" to avoid missing the best-selling Christmas season (december 1968).
The original USA proof cover slick have the London logo, catalog number and spine print on it. In the USA, only stereo LP's from Beggars Banquet are existing.
Since 1984 the toilet cover was first used on CD and LP re-issues.
The "God rolls his own" message under the band name helped expedite the recall on the cover.
This is an original color proof album cover slick (not a cover, see the size in the pictures and compare it with the "white invitation cover", it is smaller). See the photos from the spine with the info: PS 539 , Beggar's Banquet / The Rolling Stones , London.
There is NO record included in this auction, ONLY the cover slick.
The "white invitation cover" is only there to show the size difference and won't be sold in this auction.
The only auction I could find in the past from another cover slick was in 2006:
http://www.popsike.com/Rolling-Stones-Lp-Beggars-Banquet-GRAFITI-COVER-SLICK/4819071223.html
This cover slick was sold for $2250.00 US dollars and was already folded, no excellent condition like in my auction.
This cover slick is also mentioned in the collector's book: "Rolling Stones Worldwide 3, an anthology of original LP releases 1963 - 1971." On page 81, with this inscription: "the original design went so far in the spring of 1968 that cover carrying the toilet wall design were indeed printed in the USA. However, they were soon destroyed and only a few precious copies have survived. A photo of an original 1968 cover slick with London company logo and catalogue number PS 539 is depicted here" (see the last photo above from page 81). "Collector's value: ****** (1968 toilet wall cover slick)". On page 10 of the book the value is explained like: ****** (6 stars) = above 500 Euro (to be more clear, there are only 6 item's in this 385 page book with, the highest, 6 star rating).
