TOO MANY COOKS - Out of Print
Cray stirs Southern soul music and blues for his first public feast, in 1980. At this point little known outside the Pacific Northwest, he utilizes his clean, clear, and boyish tenor voice and still-developing guitar style to inhabit a thoughtfully chosen program of covers (from Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf, etc.) and jealous-guy originals. The contemporary blues recording debut (originally released as Who's Been Talkin' in 1980), while naturally not as strong as his later work (especially Bad Influence, released five years later), is the work of an extremely promising artist.
The album is an appealing mix of standards (Willie Dixon's "Too Many Cooks," Howlin' Wolf's "Who's Been Talkin'," O.V. Wright's "I'm Gonna Forget About You," among others) and originals. Among the strongest of the latter are the slow blues "I'd Rather Be a Wino" and the closing number, "If You're Thinkin' What I'm Thinkin'," which contains the flavorful mix of tight rhythms, excellent guitar work, strong vocals, and bittersweet mood that would become Cray's hallmark.
STRONG PERSUADER - Out of Print original release (w/ small cut out in cover)
Cray's commercial breakthrough. The single 'Smokin' Gun" spearheaded yet another blues revival. This album is a strong collection of blues and R&B-based songs steeped in the tradition of Bobby Bland, 0. V. Wright, Stax Records, and guitar stylings of equal parts Steve Cropper and Albert Collins. The songs are thematically linked-all deal with cheating and its ramifications-and give Cray an anguished, contemporary persona.
Stinging urban blues by way of Texas and Memphis distinguish Robert Cray's major-label debut, which followed three strong independent releases. Here he fleshes out his sound with bursts of brassy Southern soul courtesy of the Memphis Horns, but keeps his pungent, steely guitar solos out front in an engaging dialogue with his plaintive vocals. Released in 1986, Strong Persuader signaled that Cray, as a writer--like his contemporary Stevie Ray Vaughan--had something to say about his interior life beyond the usual blues man's laments, an approach that pays homage to the music's rich traditions while suggesting new areas of inquiry.
Tracks include: . Smoking Gun 2. I Guess I Showed Her 3. Right Next Door (Because Of Me) 4. Nothin' But A Woman 5. Still Around 6. More Than I Can Stand 7. Foul Play 8. I Wonder 9. Fantasized 10. New Blood
MIDNIGHT STROLL - Original 1990 Mercury Records Release - small cutout on jacket - Tremendously rare in this original release - 17 years out of print.
This album was honed by months on the road. By now the Memphis Horns receive star billing and achieve a perfect marriage with Cray's sound. Original members Peter Boe and David Olson are gone, and new keyboardist Jimmy Pugh favors a Hammond B-3 organ over synthesizers, a welcome move. Second guitarist Tim Kahaitsu offers interesting interplay with Cray. Also, Cray finally pushes his vocals over the edge. Highlights are "Bouncin' Back" and "Consequences."
Robert Cray adds a bit more soul to the mix on this album, which features the Memphis Horns most prominently. Most of the songs are Cray doing what Cray does best--slow, soulful, done-me-wrong (or, alternatively, I-done-wrong) songs chock full of great guitar. No complaints there, and when he adds a bit of vocal growl here and there, as on the album opener "The Forecast (Calls for Pain)" (also featuring some excellent bass from Richard Cousins), and the slow shuffle "Holdin' Court," it keeps things interesting. This album indicates a slight shift in Cray's direction; although he's always included a touch of soul in his blues, here it's more pronounced than before, a tendency he continued in subsequent recordings.
