Mr. Ashley’s work — witty, multilayered music-theater dreamscapes akin to aural hypertext — defied ready classification, and that was clearly his intent. Technically, many of his compositions were chamber operas, scored for a handful of singers, with recorded backgrounds of electronic sounds.
