Description
Carousel is the original cast recording of the landmark Broadway musical by Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics). Originally issued by Decca Records in 1945 as a five-disc, 12-inch 78 RPM shellac album set, it preserves performances by much of the original Broadway cast from one of the most celebrated musicals in American theatre history. The album was among the most ambitious cast recordings of its era and helped establish the practice of preserving Broadway productions on record. (en.wikipedia.org)
Premiering on April 19, 1945, at the Majestic Theatre in New York, Carousel followed the enormous success of Oklahoma! and further demonstrated Rodgers and Hammerstein's ability to combine memorable songs with serious dramatic storytelling. Adapted from Ferenc Molnár's play Liliom, the musical tells the poignant story of carnival barker Billy Bigelow and mill worker Julie Jordan, exploring themes of love, redemption, sacrifice, and hope.
