Here's an extremely rare goodie! An actual concert poster from the heady,post-bop,post-punk late 1970's,when it was not uncommon for the punk/r&b retro of a very young James White/James Chance to channel James Brown funk as he opened for the ultimate space(is the place)man,Sun Ra! Of course,the billing was discreet-so to speak. Sun Ra and his large ensemble was the "Mystery guest" listed. As the line went-"Mystery? Mister Ra!" This was a great concert all around,with the kind of crazy over the top theatre-Disco Tex performing with the Disco Lolita's!-that made the period so full of promise. June Tyson lead the band with her showpiece number "We Travel The Spaceways",and Sun Ra-resplendent in some sort of flowing ,colorful garb led the boggie-train,band and patrons,across the dance floor. And dancing overall went well until the crack of dawn-yeah,man! Defunkt -with trombonist Joseph Bowie,brother of Lester Bowie of the Art Ensemble of Chicago-got down-and then took things out! This all took place in a cavernous NYC warehouse setting on 19th street in Chelsea(NYC). I believe the musicologists out there can approximate the year by the groups listed. James White had yet to morph into James White and The Contortions(the groups all were interchangeable for a time)and given the month(Feb.).?? Come on,you're almost there! Figure Feb.of 79'or 80'... New York was a much different city then-grittier,dirtier and as this poster suggests,a lot more fun. Yes-the poster has stains,discolorations,a tear or two,and all the accumulated nicks and such after about 30 years of use. Still,a certifiable rarity for the rock or Sun Ra collector.
