REMA REMA. Wheel in Small Doses LP (Le Coq Musique)
A limited-edition album released as a kind of compliment to the recent ‘Fond Affections’ compilation. However, as Gary Asquith explains in the liner notes, it became apparent that the tracks included here which didn’t make it onto ‘Fond Affections’ were just as important to the legacy of Rema Rema as those that did. The sound quality might not be up to current audio-standards but they still capture Rema Rema's energy and attitude just as perfectly and, as such, this is an album that fans of this legendary band will find essential. Most of these tracks were initially released as a very limited edition CD-r with ‘Small Doses’ fanzine, but it soon became obvious that they deserved wider distribution. This album is an extended version of the CD and even a first listen will quickly reveal it to be a vital release. The album begins with the brief ‘Coxoscillation Blues Intro’ before excellent alternative versions of ‘Feedback Song’ and ‘Rema Rema’, still sounding visceral despite the lo-fi quality. This side of the album ends with the almost quirky and otherwise unavailable ‘Laurence Harvey’, which reveals another dimension to the band. Side two includes more otherwise unavailable tracks, starting with the quirky, upbeat and danceable ‘Message to Sweetheart’ which merges into the wonderfully-titled ‘Robots Don’t Like Jelly’. An instrumental version of ‘Gallery/Oh Rock’n’Roll’ ensues which illustrates the complexity of the bands arrangements, even within their DIY approach, while the album ends with the peculiar (and more recent) oddity of a radio advert for ‘Fond Affections’, broadcast on Woodstock radio during 2019… The legend continues! The thing is, although this band were only together for a relatively short time, they produced some truly impressive and unique music, while the various members went on to produce further work with the likes of Mass, Wolfgang Press, Renegade Soundwave, Adam & The Ants and Psychic TV… clearly a group of very creative people and, as such, these recordings are a vital glimpse of works in progress and a strong suggestion of what might have been had they continued. With so little released originally, anything that appears now can only be considered essential. I just hope that there are still further recordings to be made available, because so far nothing has been a disappointment. If you miss this album it will be you’re your biggest loss of the year!
