Product Description

Up for auction is a very rare vinyl LP record personally produced by John Denver titled "John Denver Sings", plus an assortment of John Denver ephemera.

Recorded in 1966 when he was first starting his career and singing as a member of The Mitchell Trio, this private "white label" album was made for friends and given out as a Christmas gift in that year.  The album was dedicated to Milt Okun, a famous record producer who created arrangements for a number of well known individuals and groups, among them Denver.

The back cover of the album has a personal message that reads, "John, It has really been a pleasure for me to meet and get to know you. I hope we can go to the Virgin Islands someday. Your friend, (signed) John Denver."  The gentleman this is addressed to was John M. Meek (1929-2016), who among other things wrote speeches for John and Robert Kennedy as well as Lyndon Johnson.

The record consists of thirteen (13) songs including songs by Lennon & McCartney ("Here There and Everywhere", "Yesterday", "And I Love Her", "In My Life").  Another, written by John Denver titled "Babe I Hate To Go" was later recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary under the title of "Leaving On a Jet Plane" and was their only #1 hit single.  The record label shows the album #HJD 66. (Likely his real name initials, i.e., Henry John Deustchendorf?)

The record album cover has various pictures of Denver and other musicians.  The front side shows wear and has a creased upper left corner.  The top and bottom seams have separated about 3/4 of their length.  The back side which bears the writing, has a piece of the paper cover missing from the upper right corner.  A paper note has been added by a previous owner, noting when and where the album came from.  

The autograph has been certified as authentic by the Professional Autograph Authentication Services (PAAS) and a Certificate of Authenticity (pictured) is included with this album.

The record has been recently played and has no skips, cracks, nicks, chips, scratches or other damage that would affect play.  It comes with the original plain paper sleeve that is completely torn along one seam and partially on another.

Also included with this record is a collection of paper ephemera about his death.  Too numerous to list everything but here's a brief summary of the some of the items:

Original memorial services program, "A Celebration - The Life of John Denver" dated October 18, 1997 (Aspen, Colorado)
Newspaper clippings from the Washington Post, Boston Herald, Aspen Sunday News dated 10-19-1997 (full edition), Snowmass Village Sun (Oct. 15-21, 1997)(full edition), plus others concerning his death, memorials, etc.
