THE SLEEVE NOTES :
The B.B.C. producers of Saturday Cub write :
Almost six years ago we first heard "This is your old mate, Brian Matthew, saying "Welcome to Saturday Club,"
or as he writes, it on his running order, T I Y O M B M S W T S C
Over the six years, the radio audience in Great Britain has increased to one five of the whole population.
The show is broadcast to every corner of the world on short wave and is one of the top pop radio shows in the world.
Its popularity owes much to the informal uncondesending manner of Brian Matthews. Also we pride ourselves
in giving the fans whar they want by including top British stars , visiting artists from the States
and being on the ball with new sounds, new singles and new groups.
Many artists have had their first broadcast on the show. Brian Poole and the Tremeloes are a " Saturday Club "
discovery and are a group which we felt certain would have a hit record soon after their first appearence.
On this L P we have included artists who have had records in the Top Twenty like Karl Denver ,
The Vernon Girls and THE ROLLING STONES .
And , as in the broadcast show, there are artists for whome we predict future chart success like
Like Lorne Gibson, Dave Berry and The Marauders.
Three quarters of " Saturday Cub " is made up of performances by live artists, but the remaining half hour includes
a batch of new releases, an L P spot and of course, requests.Among the thousands of cards we receive each
week we find listeners resorting to all sorts of dodges to attract our attention. We've had requests printed on china
embroidered on cloths, and written on sailor hats and dustbins. A request for The Chimes came in the form
of a huge foam rubber bell. As we'vekept most of these odd requests, The Saturday Club office is beginning to
look like a strange museum.
When you play this L P , try and imagine our control room in Broadcasting House with Vernon Lawrence
and Bev Phillips looking after the control panel and turntables, Jeff Griffin playing in the tapes
and Shirley Jones keeping an eye on the timing. And staying unruffled through every possible crisis
( and we've had a few in our time ) is Brian Matthew who says
" T A F N S Y N W " or " That's all for now - see you next week ".
Well that took me back to the 60's listening to the radio - nice times too
