ALBUM PLAYED FOR AUDIO GRADING:

Yes – brilliant! – sound quality throughout!

THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST is a complex and varied collection of music, with many parts of the audio having little instrumentation. It is also a  famously very sensitive piece of vinyl and hard to find in decent audio condition. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like ‘SING THIS ALL TOGETHER’, or ‘CITADEL’.   I am pleased to say this is a great MONO pressing, which sounds brilliant and plays with amazing sound separation and clarity! This vinyl looks and sounds virtually unplayed.

This great record plays up to the high visual grading and beyond. Strong, undistorted sound free of any loud pops or clicks. Channels are clean and unstressed. The record plays with staggering power, with a minimum of surface sound during the tracks. Rich and detailed sound with massive dynamics and unique mix and production. Its a fine pressing and any static or sound blemishes are very slight. I will give a detailed account below:

Beginning with the iconic 'Sing This All Together', the music bursts in with great clear audio, no loud pops or clicks at all. There is some very light static during the run ins but it fades as soon as the music starts. Moving into the wonderful 'Citadel', which demonstrates The Stones incredible subtle production layering, with notes and effects that are usually lost on most even relatively played vinyls. Here the audio sings out with amazing clarity. For such a varied track this is just an incredible audio performance. No pops or clicks and barely any background static at all. On the quiet section there is some light static but thats it. Incredible. There is static between the tracks but again it clears up as soon as the music starts, and I may as well confirm that this is the case for the whole album. A bit of static literally in the adjoining grooves, and then superb clear sound during the music. 

'In Another Land'  bursts out with very little static in the quiet areas.  Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound. A couple of light pops at the start of the track but they are barely noticeable. '2000 Man' plays with great clear sound, and the instrumental section, heavily layered again, sounds great. The intro is so clear and sharp, with an absolute minimal of surface sound. Superb clear bright audio, it sounds amazing. The return to 'Sing This All Together' again plays superbly, not a single pop or click, just great clear music. This a great audio performance that would be hard to better, the entire album plays with extremely bright sound.

Side 2. smoothes in with the incredible 'She's A Rainbow', following nice clean run ins the sound is great. Some very light static and a few very light tics in the middle, but nothing obtrusive. There is a single click between the tracks, and then a couple of very light pops during play, but certainly nothing dominant. The delicate 'The Lantern' sounds incredible. No pops or clicks and virtually no surface sound at all. Amazing for such a paired dow track. Back with the upbeat 'Gomper', the audio is just superb, with minimal static and clear vocal layering. No obtrusive sound interference at all. The music bursts in, very loud, clean and bright. 

'2000 Light Years From Home' alternates between the delicate and the rockous. This track can be a real test on this album and here it sings out with great clarity and an amazing lack of surface sound. This variable track is nearly always blighted with loud pops, clicks, buzzing crackle and distortion, but not here. The occasional ultra light static only, and stunning clear audio. 'On With The Show', rounds off the album, again to the same high audio standard. Superb clear sound, even those quiet passages are really clear.  

All the way through every track plays with incredible definition. A lack of loud pops, clicks or obtrusive interference on this great record makes this a great collectable press of this great album. The music jumps out with definition and clarity, the vocals come through with tremendous power. Its the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars multi layers come through crisp and clear. The tonal quality make this a sensational pressing. The clear and extra loud 1st cut engineering gives the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten.

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this great record. On the whole this great record plays through with No loud pops or clicks. There is some very light background static in quiet areas, but it is very light. 

Great audio with minimal interference to distract from the overly enjoyment of this great record and surprisingly little surface or static noise between the tracks.

The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, trumpets and vocals, which come through with tremendous power. As is the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear.

A great all round example of this great  vinyl. Staggering first MONO mix, unlike the re-issues which lack the impact.    

I would give this great pressing a strict audio grading of NEAR MINT.

THE RECORD – VISUAL GRADING  

A superb piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl has been little played. On initial inspection the vinyl looks largely unmarked. Seen under a spot light it does have some faint sleeve removal marks, and a few hairlines, but the are light and have no effect on the sound. 

There are a few very faint handling marks, this vinyl has been played carefully. Unbelievable to think this vinyl is over 40 years old! 

A really wonderful example. Grades NEAR MINT.

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.        

THE COVER 

A great example of this rare sleeve, the front and back have a great glossy sheen, bright in colour with intact laminate. There is no laminate creasing on the spine, the spine text is totally intact. There is little corner wear, the spine is near perfect, having a great shape.

The Inner gatefold is also in brilliant condition, unmarked with really bright stunning colouring and virtually unmarked.

The opening edges are very square and un frayed.  The back cover is nice and clean, with NO ring wear, which is very unusual for these delicate covers. 

A great example. All round, this is a really nice cover!!!   A really wonderful example. Grades EXCELLENT.

THE LABELS 

Famous and Rare UNBOXED ‘GROOVED’ DECCA labels are in wonderful Condition, no marks or writing and barely any detectable spindle trails. These are lovely Turquoise labels with the metallic silver text.

Great all round examples! A really wonderful example. Grades NEAR MINT.

THE INNER

This original pressing comes with the original thin paper RED inner sleeve. Crisp and Clean there is some creasing, but no seam splits or tape marks on the bottom edge. So rare to find an original red inner in this is still a decent complete example. The record will of course come in a replacement plain poly lined inner. 

Grade at VERY GOOD PLUS to EXCELLENT.

RARITY

Arguably one of the most important albums of the  60’s. A GROOVED DECCA PRESS in this type of condition is extremely scarce. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. The album sound range is so delicate it is almost impossible to find original clear sound vinyls. Any EARLY PRESS examples with a record in this type of condition, that plays with really strong sound, is very rare.

The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce. Finding a nice cover like this, with a lovely piece of vinyl, fantastic!.

Finding a pressing that has clear sound is very hard, as the instrumentation on Satanic Majesties is very light and diverse. Early DECCA MONO pressings with 3D covers are rare now. Most pressings available are very poor quality with heavily played, worn out vinyl. The strange mix of music on Satanic Majesties is very unforgiving with a complex array of sounds. So many pressings have been over played with scratches and groove wear distortion. Not many survive that play with clear audio and have un damaged covers.

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

The highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and is what I always aim for. I only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance, super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest copies you will find occasional static sound or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and I advise a light clean should be given between plays for optimal performance.

MY RECORD GRADING SYSTEM IS AS FOLLOWS - (BASED ON RECORD COLLECTOR MAGAZINE U.K. )

MINT: Virtually unplayed. The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. Cover is pristine.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

V.G PLUS: The record will still be nice and shiny, but may have a few light marks, and will play well. Slight wear and tear on the cover.

V.G: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, etc.

FAIR: Fair. It is noticeable that the record has been played so much that the sound quality has deteriorated very noticeably. The cover and contents are showing signs of folding, scuffing of edges etc.
