Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresy and highly attractive with any spindle marks tiny, very few and faint. Being honest, finding it hard to find any of note at all.

Cat Number: COC 59100 [later pressings had the COC prefix changed to CUN].

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 110 grams. Below average for it’s era, I have rarely found this record to be much heavier. Rolling Stones Records were never the quality of Decca, but how many others ever were?

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The title itself is moderate, but this early example is very different as it includes the first made much heavier style zip (as seen in close-up). Known as the ‘PAN’ zip as engraved into the distinctively round hole style puller part. The second issue zipper, is much smaller, around 60 per scent small infact, and has a much different shape with two small rectangle ‘holes’. These original ‘PAN’ zips are far, far harder to find and often when they show are badly tarnished and often siezed-up with rust. This one has survived in super shape and easily unzips to full length as seen on my other close-up photograph. Also note on my close up, the fragile and very damage-prone buckle area is totally perfect, uncreased and undamaged or rubbed in any way – this too is hard to find like this. Often the victim of protective inners that catch this delicate part. I would presume the zipper style was changed due to cost, these are not cheap lightweight zips like the replacement ones, these have plenty of real metal and looks fantastic. Other than this, all else is pretty much the same but note, the later copies had the catalogue number prefix changed from COC to CUN. I will make no comment on the choice of these letter choices. So a rare original and at last one that plays well, these can be very disappointing as pressing quality is somewhat variable and never Decca quality. My first one of these for ages, and one of the very best too.

Brief Info: The first album on the new Rolling Stones Record label and feature to include Mick Taylor as a full-time member replacing Brian Jones. A wonderful album including the ever-popular single ‘Brown Sugar’ with varied material, some quite dark. Famed for it’s zipper cover which was based on an idea by Andy Warhol and designed by Craig Braun, many regard it as the greatest album cover ever made. Inside the cover and beneath the zip lies a pair of white pants and text ‘Andy Warhol - this photograph may not be etc’. Do not underestimate the rarity of the first ‘PAN’ zipper cover, they are highly sort after and unique to the UK examples, but only for a relatively brief time before being changed. Later copies still, omitted the zips altogether. This copy includes the insert and the condition for the set is very fine with the record playing very well indeed with little unwanted bar a tiny few gentle ticks on ‘I Got the Blues’, those apart, almost perfect, and never take that for granted as many copies will disappoint.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear (Damage): Very High: the buckle part of the front especially is so often seen torn and even with pieces missing.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: (or very close to). a single unlaminated cover but with a third card piece inside. Matt finished and in one includes the much rarer very large, heavyweight ‘PAN’ zipper. Printed and made in England and includes the insert sheet that was printed by Richard Davis Ltd.

Cover Front: The only blemishing of note is very faint staining or toning traces near the left edge near the top. Very light and minor indeed but I will mention all I see. Still clean and showing minimal traces of any wear and, somewhat unusually, the buckle flap that is separate and lifts, is totally undamaged and practically crease-free with no rubbing. Marks and any creases are few and faint and this looks really fine to the eye.

The Zipper: The original and first-made ‘PAN’ heavyweight and large zipper is in super condition, and still works perfectly with little effort in moving up or down. Still very firmly attached inside via the cloth surround. Minimal traces of any tarnishing and unbent, the ‘PAN’ etching is still easily visible BOTH sides of the gripper. All the teeth parts are superb and totally unaged or blemishes and all work perfectly. The thick and heavyweight top parts are only mildly aged and looks just right for a cover this great age.

Cover Back: The only mkld blemish to the back is a small pressmark near the very centre. These backs often rubbed against other zipper covers and this is hardly unsual. What is unusual is the fact it is so small and light and no ink has been removed from this back bar faint traces near the bottom edge. Barely any rubbing and no ringwear with barely any noteworthy creasing at all. A light stain mark or toning near the top right corner and odd tiny trace further down on the spine edge, but look hard. Quite unusual to see both front and back looking so devoid of real wear and that zipper makes the real difference.

Cover Inner Sheet: From what I can see, this looks perfect withe white pants and midriff artwork looking as made with text details mentioned above.

Top Edges: All sharp, neat and crisp with no burring or thickening to all three. The record enters here.

Bottom Edges: Some light patchy rubbing to the back.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Very neat with little rubbing or wear.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression, the ends are tapered in manufacture. A white surface with some very light rubbing which shows little. All text is present with any clipping to the characters tiny.

Cover Summary: Not perfect, but still a very fine and importantly, attractive example of this early-made cover which is regarded by most as a ‘classic’. Lovely to offer the ‘PAN’ zip original too which is far rarer and less seen, also in such perfect working condition and so little worn. This elusive and sort-after item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the plain white, unlined solid inner has little wear at all but has one crease on one top corner. Few others at all and all edges secure with minimal discolouration.

The Insert Sheet: MINT(-): and looking practically as made. Clean, uncreased with very sharp and neat edges. Looking lovely with superb artwork of the band on one side. The text side includes song credits and musicians, and if the production is not to your liking, simply ‘turn it up’.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and the only small mark of any note is on side two with around a dozen light to very light clicks – the only ones noted on the entire album that plays way better than most of I have heard. Any other visual blemishes are few, fine and faint with no sound, without doubt, this one has not been played many times at all which for this classic title, is very unusual. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark and classic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Just those brief and light ticks, most very light infact at the very end of ‘Bitch’ on fade and on start of ‘I Got the Blues’, which come and go in a few brief seconds. Just enough to remind you are listening to be very old record and how many will ever play with absolutely nothing unwanted?, especially this title with fine grooves and variable pressing quality. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound, better enjoyed turned up a little. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and that is unsual too. Many I have heard have had inherent crackle and Rolling Stones Records pressings simply were not up to Decca standard. No pops or other clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, and compared to most I have heard, exceptional. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any real note, spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this evergreen classic. This copy overall, will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. The heavy-duty ‘PAN’ zipper covered copies are elusive and do not get offered too often, so do not lose it.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
