Description
The list of laudable achievements by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs is lengthy and distinguished, and I'll leave the background to their site's autobiography. In brief, MFSL is a specialty imprint dedicated to producing the highest fidelity LPs, cassettes and CDs. At their peak—which may or may not have ended depending on your point of view—MFSL's Original Master Recording (OMR) series was the end-all be-all for tweakers who spent the '70s trying to master quadraphonic sound. The imprint's early fame was sealed by the wild crossover success of their summer 1979 watershed, an OMR of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, which you can read all about here. In a phenomenal one-two punch, the Beatles' Abbey Road OMR followed a few months later.
MFSL's OMR releases were made of JVC-exclusive "Super Vinyl," a sturdy composite that improved on the company's fragile CD-4 quadraphonic plates. With the success of the OMR series, JVC and MFSL took things even further in the early '80s, unleashing the Holy Grail Ultra High Quality Record (UHQR) series, pressed on 200-gram Super Vinyl. The nine UHQR releases were hand-numbered, limited to +/- 5000 copies, and, as far as the pop and rock titles go, rarely fetch less than $500 at auction.
With their reputation and finances secured by shrewd catalog-building, MFSL produced three stunning boxed sets between 1982 and 1984. The Beatles Collection, a complete OMR discography, came first. MFSL's Gregg Schnitzer told some wild tales about this one to John Harp, during a 2001 interview originally published on Harp's now abandoned audiophile site aurealm.com (I've rescued it). Naturally BC-1 sold as expected, and with the profits MFSL mapped out 1983's Sinatra collection and 1984's Rolling Stones OMR box.
The Stones box consistently fetches the highest price at auction, despite an extensive remastering campaign undertaken by ABKCO a few years ago. It's strange since the Beatles collection is a complete "official" discography, but the Stones set is a perfect demarcation point for fans of their first wave, compiling the major records from the ABKCO era, up to and including Hot Rocks. I am the original owner of this set. The records have never been played. The Beatles set has sold as high as $3100.00 never played in the original box. They say the Rolling Stones set is way more popular. My edition number is 6694. All of the original paperwork is still sealed in the original envelope. Plus it includes the Beatles original master recording mfsl 2-072. The black case has a few scuff marks on the top. Otherwise this set is perfect.
