When , according to the legend, the Rolling Stones unloaded their guitars and amps in 1964 at the Chess Records’ Ter-Mar recording studios in Chicago, to record this album and a few other songs, it was none else than Howlin Wolf who helped them carry their stuff around. The Rolling Stones returned the favor - and kept returning it for many years thereafter - by including many Chicago bluesmen in their TV appearances, by making cameos on their albums and by - like they did here - recording a ton of classic chess blues covers. Now, here’s the tricky part. This is the Stones’ second British album - my personal favorite Rolling Stones album - which came out in the United States under a different title and with slightly modified content (it was issued as "Rolling Stones Now"). Many of the songs on the American version are - I feel - inferior to their British counterparts. An additional complicating factor is that, in 1993, Rolling Stones themselves made a contract with their worldwide distributors to issue release the American versions of their albums everywhere in the world (an arrangement which was slightly modified in 2002). To compound the mistake, in 2002 ABKCO reissued every single Rolling Stones album – EXCEPT THIS ONE - in a gorgeous SACD/Hybrid sound. What happened to this title, and why this remains the only Stones album not available in decades, we have not a clue. When it comes to ABKCO, your guess is as good as mine. But I think it is a safe bet that we will NEVER see this album on compact disc. EVER.
The original UK album included 12 songs: Everybody needs somebody to love - Down Home Girl - You can’t catch me - What a shame! - Grown up wrong - Down the road apiece - Under the Boardwalk - I can’t be satisfied - Pain in my heart - Off the Hook - Suzie Q. No less than five "Chess" covers are included, but the Stones’ versions are radiant, energetic and punchy, not bland, inferior, poppy or “sanitized” as was the fashion in those days. Although Mick Jagger’s attempt to emulate Otis Redding’s emotional anthem "Pain in my heart" may sound pathetic from today’s perspective, the other covers are absolutely great and easily pass the test of time.
For its extraordinary contribution to the contemporary music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, songwriters and general public, or for some other inherent quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, show business professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, the legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice , Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton, Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). · CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is STILL in its original poly-lined stock inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a few visible wrinkles along the seams
- The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers
- Cover has visible "wrinkles"(creases) in two of its corners.
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 4 (back side)
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No yellowing from aging
- No writing
- No stamps
- No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams
- No peel-off marks
- No stains
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No bar codes
- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
