Label/Format: Decca – original green stereo unboxed format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light+ and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. These marks are fine and only shows under angled light. This is another album from that lovely collection acquired recently, an audiophile collector who only played his records on high-end equipment.

Cat Number: TXS 101.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The title itself is fairly common but the earlier pressings – pre-1969, with the unboxed format and cover with NO peep-hole mono/stereo indicator are much harder to find especially in superb visual and playing conditions. The cover is extremely fragile and delicate, most are seen badly creased, damaged and the book often a real mess, sometimes ripped out altogether. The earlier examples has the book inside the gatefold fixed, later ones had these pages as an insert. Although a couple of pages have a single staple pulled, the book is still firmly attached to the centrefold and with care it will remain so. The record is in beautiful condition and only the odd ultra fine surface trace hairline mark and it plays to perfection from start to finish – never take this for granted. This was a very popular album and why wouldn’t it be? Most were played into submission and few of the early unboxed copies survive quite this lightly played and clean and importantly play beautiful with NOTHING unwanted Such copies are very scarce and are to be treasured when they get offered.

Original Year of Release: 1966. This copy is not an absolute first but would have been pressed between this date and early 1969 when the format of the label and cover changed, so an early example for certain.

Brief Info: The first Stones compilation and what a gem it is too - the UK version has a different track listing and vastly superior material (in my opinion anyway) and 14 songs instead of the US versions 12. Many of the songs were not included on the early full albums but were mostly single releases. Just look at the songs included, it hardly gets better, these gems sound fantastic. So often heard on crackly 45 rpm singles, this album compiled them altogether to be enjoyed on the more user-friendly long-playing format and that makes this album indispensable. This was available in mono and stereo and I have always found the stereo version harder to find as an early pressing and the album does sound quite different on the two formats. The play-grade on this was a joy from start to finish with quite wonderful, clear, focused and quiet sound - all you would expect from a Decca press from new but so many got played into submission and the sound became degraded as a result – not this one. This is a splendid example and it will remind those of a certain age what this once looked and sounded like. The delicate cover has also been well cared for but has a few mild blemishes - now over 40-year-old, I think it’s earned to right to have. Only the most uncompromising perfectionist would not be pleased with this, this really is a lovely set.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+.

Cover Grade and Format: Undergraded EX, when I compare this to most seen these days, it puts a beauty like this into true context. This is genuine original format with NO peep-hole on the back and the book stapled to the centrefold. The book has six pages and are printed on quite thin paper but high quality with a semi-gloss sheen. The front and back are laminated with Clarifoil and it was printed and made in England by Robert Stace. It has its own unique Cat No. TXS 101, the mono version was different.

Lamination – Front & Back: Such a fragile one, the front is only single thickness and quite soft card too. This lovely example has vastly more positives than negatives and importantly looks fantastic. Both sides have near total full adhesion with no major lifts or blisters. A tiny one one the front on the spine edge (surprise) near the top corner but this really is very fine and small. The back has a similar one and it shows little. In terms of this common blemishing, these hardly register with many seen with huge bubbles and major cracks, this has nothing remotely like this. Another major factor is the lack of creasing which is highly unusual, especially on the front. Both faces are shiny and very clear with minimal traces of any friction rubs or dulling. Light corner rubbing on the spine corners on the front and more on the back do show but the eye is not attracted to these areas to any great degree. The edges are incredibly unforgiving and most burr and thicken badly. Here only the bottom ‘resting’ edge has thickened to any small degree with any burring minimal. The back has the merest trace of lightly dulled record impression but again no real surprise given the weight of the record and duration its been inside, this only just visible under angled light. Barely a pressmark or even surface marks to be seen on both surfaces, both will prove difficult to find much better and they real nice.

Cover Inner Gatefold & Book: All in lovely condition and the lack of creasing to the book pages is always a bonus and they have minimal traces of handling and super clean too. A couple have slipped off the staple but are still quite solidly intact inside – but be careful. Superb artwork of the young band too as I hope my pictures show.

Top Edges: Crisp and neat with barely any traces of wear.

Bottom Edges: These have thickened a little with considerable weight on this storage edge. I have ever seen one ever that has not to some degree, this I consider normal.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp and neat with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: The spine is very neat and attractive and untoned. The top and bottom corners have rubbed, it appears to me this may be been kept inside a record case at some time and this trait of rubbed corners is often a result but the rest of the cover has remained in superb condition overall. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. The text has just a couple of tiny chips, that apart all pristine under solid laminate.

Corners: The right set are neat with only minor tip rubs. The spine pair have rubbed more with most wear on the bottom of the back. Most retain fine shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better overall. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors, if only slightly below connoisseur’s standard. Truly a lovely very early example and is a pleasure to hold and view.

The Inner: This one has the early Decca inner which as its UK Patent but foreign patents pending text. This is also in great condition and grades EX++ with the polylining fully intact and clear, the window is undamaged as new. Later inners to this album were blue and red that filled the peep-hole to denote mono or stereo (blue being stereo). This copy and inner pre-dates this format that came in in 1969. The edges are unsplit and it has not darkened or toned with age, the odd minor mark and surface ruffle on the back but no heavy creases.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence reitterated by supreme sound. Barely a noteworthy mark or blemish to be seen, the odd surface trace if being critical but finding this vintage classic much better will prove near impossible. Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even register and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Typical high quality Decca vinyl from the golden-era, this copy will remind what a new copy once looked and sounded like. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove nigh-on impossible to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
