Label Conditions: All four appear practically as made: supremely clean and highly attractive with any spindle marks or blemishes few, minor and very faint. A smallish mark on side three near the hole that I am sure was present in manufacture.

Cat Number: COC 69100.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 140 / 140 grams. To date, my heaviest pressed pair for this album. Some pressings of this one are quite thin.

Rarity: I guess logic would say a fairly common album, it charted at one in the UK and US, and for sure it does show up reasonably often. But the early pressed copies included a strip of postcards depicting scenes from the ‘Fall From Exile on Main Street’ and they are not easily found now especially fully intact, complete and practically as made. How many of these would have been separated, used and lost? This vintage copy includes all 12 with just a couple of small perf pulls on three of the folds on the edges. Never easy to fine the complete strip without one or two split perfs. Also this is a title that is more often seen with very poor covers. Tatty, grubby and often significantly damaged from the inner gatefold storage. Both records are stored in the same right-side area putting huge stress on a single thickness spine. This usually results in splits and badly damaged spines. The problem exasperated still further by two card inner sleeves that were often rammed inside cause even more damage. Not only that, the front face is single thickness card and often is seen very creased with severely burred edges and highly prone to sticker tears too. This album when found complete, with two practically Mint records inside and all contents in superb conditions is quite rare, make no mistake. And lastly, the records are seldom heard devoid of some surface sounds, these are not Decca records which were usually immaculate. This pair are wonderful: well pressed and quiet throughout and totally devoid of that irritating crackle that marrs so many copies. I have heard this title many times and yet to hear better than this. These four sides set the highest standard possible and plays throughout as silent as vinyl ever will, I can never imagine finding these heavier-than-average record better.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Regarded by many as their greatest ever album, and one over time I have got to love more and more. Unlike previous albums, this rampaging double set offers a thicker sound mix and balance that has always been something of a mystery. Faster material, more up-tempo, laden with riffs this is a very uplifting and entertaining and does include some wonderful songs. ‘Exile’ offered a new sound and a new dirction which most fans loved, and most thought it worked perfectly. This is a strong complete copy with both inners and one set of 12, still joined postcards, two immaculate quite heavily pressed early records and a very fine, little worn, neat, clean cover. This is not perfect, but also sets a high standard, finding one with no wear or minor ‘damage’ is incredibly difficult. All four sides play beautifully, devoid of irritating crackle with no pressings sounds or distortion, and never take this for granted on this album. For Stones fans needing this gem, well this one sets a very high standard and will not be beaten easily.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably undergraded as such. A gatefold format that is ‘boxy’ with wider edges, a trait of G&L manufacture. this being rarer than the standard, more flat cover. Unlaminated with central storage and single thickness front. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Some were made by Shorewood and have the thinner edges and spine.

Cover Front: So vulnerable to wear and damage prone, this still looks very nice and has little to fault. This is clean with few marks and barely any creases. A little minor scuffing to the top left corner but no burring the edges that so often become tatty and burred being so thin.

Cover Back: Clean, attractive, with a crease-dink to the top right corner – difficult to avoid – being a more boxy format for this early cover, these tend to crush and flatten, the corners are highly susceptible to wear, ironically, often so when being inserted in protective covers. There is also a pressmark about 2 inches below centre from the top edge - the culprit is obvious - that zip from ‘Sticky Fingers’. With many of the concentous collectors storing their albums chronologically, this so often rested against the famous metal zip. This has the tell-tale mark, but in this case, no ink removal and only quite light. Mostly seen under light and being honest, finding this cover without the zip mark in this area is quite difficult, so many have them. Few Stones collectors did not own ‘Sticky Fingers’ and this mischievious cover usually left it’s mark. No ringmarks or rubbing to either outer faces and both have more than stood the test of time well.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The top of the spine folds have very small splits on the very top and the central part between the folds, softened a little, this small at no more than 1 cm. The bottom of the spine is unaffected and remains strong and unsplit. The two main faces look superb, clean and fresh, any burr traces on the edges are very light indeed.

Top Edges: Still boxy and uncrushed with barely any wear.

Bottom Edges: As above and the lack of wear here is highly unusual.

Right Edge(s), and Type (the spine): The acts the spine edge with the text present and practically unworn. A fine central crease from a minor compression near the bottom. But overall again, this retains great shape and is uncrushed again.

Left Edge: The traditional spine edge, this has no text printed and has little wear, being similar to the right edge above. As stated, the top folds have around a 1 cm split which is far from unusual, with many considerably larger. The fact is, this G&L version wider edge covers, are far more vulnerable and less robust.

Corners: Three are in very neat and little worn condition and retain very fine shape. The top of the left has a moderate dink-crease which is seen on the back. This is only small and along with the two small splits in the same are, represents the only damage on this still very well preserved cover.

Cover Summary: Far more delicate, even fragile than the Shorewood version, this is more often seen totally flattened, crushed and badly damaged. This one has worn well overall, and importantly, still looks very attractive. It sould please many collectors. If the top corner wear and the smallish zip mark is an issue, do not bid.

The Illustrated Cards: MINT(-): all the cards practically as made, any blemishes tiny and minor. The only issue for the perfectionist are a couple of small perfs pulls on the three of the folds, so technically not totally joined. But still a very solid strip in super condition. These cards are now becoming harder and harder to find and only came with the earlier issues.

The Inners: MINT(-): practically as made. Unlined card inners with no splits, clean and attractive and no creasing or ringmarks from the records. Try finding these better. Two unlined paper inner sleeves for these card inners are also included in super condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): for both. Often stored directly inside the hard inners which could never be kind to the playing surfaces, that’s why discerning collectors placed their records inside polylined inners as was the case here. Any ultra fine surface traces are minuscule and only seen with close scrutiny under light, both are truly exceptional and without doubt, hardly even played. That very unusual indeed for this very popular classic album. Most of the golder-era Stones albums were heavily played and never easy to find that aren’t. Both intense black, very shiny and very solidly pressed, thicker than later pressings, these indeed, the heaviest I have yet had as a pair. Both barely even ‘run-in’ in vinyl terms, how many others will be found like this. Visually super records that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super set play up to their high visual grading with nothing to faul, and very rarely can I ever state this on this title. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is as good as it ever can gets and truly excels on a quality system. Played loud this has tremendous power and detail and is heard to best advantage. Unusually, devoid of surface sounds this is a SUPERB pressing, my very best ever. Clearly little handled, both these records could almost pass for new. Any relatively minor cover wear or blemishing is more than compensated by outstanding clean records and audio quality and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this high class album, still considered a classic and one of the genuine all time greats by the vast majority. These records will prove nearly impossible to find better than this and that’s a promise and guarantee. If, like me, you put the absolute priority on sound, this pair will fail to disappoint and these merit my highest recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
