Label/Format: Decca – boxed blue stereo format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both immaculaet: fresh, clean and highly attractive. No wear whatsoever around the hole rims and a very tight fit on my Linn spindle. Barely a spindle trace to be seen, just the odd tiny one or two (but look hard), without any doubt, this lovely record has hardly been played.

Cat Number: SKL 4852.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 143 grams. A very good weight for this still early pressing, Decca never dropped their standards in pressing quality and this will easily match any other.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate in theory: all Rolling Stones albums sold well but it’s the conditions that make the difference. Even the boxed copies rarely show up this nice. This record could almost pass for new and has the perfect stereo sound. Purchased from brand new by one ultra careful owner who treated the records with the respect they deserved. Compare to most of the 60s examples that took phenomenal hammer and abuse from parties and blunt needle Dansettes. Not all Stones fans were old enough to buy the originals and some had to buy the copies available to them at the time. There are bonuses of course: one being these were never played on vintage single channel record players that tracked at colossal weights that stripped and damaged the delicate groove walls with their often chipped and worn pickups. This copy has hardly been played at all and offers wonderful, pristine sound quality and a lovely cover too. Decca records were always very reliable for sound quality and their standards never diminished, they sound just the same as the 60s pressings. For fans wanting their records in high visual and playing conditions these will fit the bill perfectly. More similar Stones albums will follow as and when I get to play-grade them.

Original Year of Release: 1967. This boxed copy dates most likely from the early 70s.

Brief Info: Most interested collectors will know all about this title already and needs no introductions suffice to say, it was their fifth album from 1967. A more gentle album before the the psychedelia that was to follow next.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): a single format with a Clarifoil laminated front that wraps around the spine. Printed and made in England by James Upton and still on the typically thin card that was very vulnerable and highly prone to creasing and laminate problems. Indeed this cover is as thin as the first two albums made in the mid-60s but has survived in fantastic all-round condition.

Lamination & Front: The laminate is ultra clear, fresh and has a beautiful deep gloss finish, very light dulling is only seen near the very bottom under light, with normal viewing, this shines like a mirror and is ultra smooth to the touch. The dark artwork looks magnificent through this unfogged laminate that has very few marks or creases – any present are tiny, few and faint. No age discolour, even the right edge exposed strip is pure white and the laminate so clear, it is no even easy to see. With such thin card, laminate adhesion can be an issue, but this is nigh-on total with just a tiny lift near the top right corner, not even big enough to reach the colour area below it, it barely even shows. A vintage cover that defies it’s vast years and this can be held and enjoyed to the absolute maximum.

Cover Back: The most delicate of all Stones Decca backs with large areas of exposed white, most are seen in terrible grubby and tired conditions, even the slightly later ones. This has has very little to fault at all, the merest hint of darkening on the top edge is practically it and this is beyond fine and faint. The main area is still a lovely shade of white, not off-white or yellowed. Any marks are few and tiny and there are no creases. The laminate end practically devoid of grubbiness and even this is shiny and totally solid and adhered. No grubbiness or ring marks and the cover protection has more than paid dividends.

Top & Bottom Edges: Top unworn, bottom odd tiny friction trace mark.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, razor sharp with no wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: One tiny tone spot trace off being practically as made. Solid, straight with minimal traces of any compression. All text is perfect and unworn, centred a little high in manufacture, all laminate solid and uncracked.

Corners: All in superb shape and devoid of any wear worthy of mention – all retain very pointed, neat shape.

Cover Summary: A very impressive all-round example of this somewhat fragile cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner: EXCELLENT(++): this record’s original blue stereo inner is in superb condition with only some darkening near the edges. Few avoid adhesive browning on the seams, it seems to just happen with age. The lining is solid and very clear with two ultra crisp window circles. All edges solid and unsplit and barely a crease worthy of mention. A lovely old inner that will be hard to find much better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. Even though a slightly later boxed pressing, Decca did not lessen the quality of its records and this a high quality piece as you would expect. A copy hardly played on all the evidence with barely a mark or blemish worthy of mention. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. By now the Stones productions were getting more polished and this was just perfect for its vintage and will seldom be heard cleaner or better than this. No surface sounds or crackle and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. No piledriver thick, heavy needles have ruined this one, I doubt if its been on a turntable more than a couple or three times, just the way modern collectors want them. Few copies will even match this copy I feel sure, remember this is a still a record fast approching forty. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
