Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. A hugely impressive mono pair that have very modest light+ spindle marks. These being relatively fine and faint and in terms of this very popular mono record, these are well below average in number. This record was owned from new by just person who clearly played this very modestly and generally carefully. A few light marks, or surface scuff which have no sound, but still a very attractive record. Such copies of this classic in this type of condition are fast becoming rare and this is best mono unboxed example I have seen for some considerable time.

Cat Number: LK 4955.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 151 grams. A typical heavyweight Decca pressing from the golden era.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, most all Rolling Stones albums sold well but it’s the conditions that make the difference and I have always found this title one of the harder ones to find nice. The cover is difficult and often tatty and the record more regularly played to destruction with deep scratches, dulled surfaces and very poor sound. This one is on the other side of the spectrum, modestly played, lovely clean and still shiny surfaces. And most importantly, this record has no groovewear, so the audio quality is very impressive and plays with little unwanted at all. This classic is far harder to find like this and correctly this now reflects in the price guides.

Original Year of Release: 1968. One of the less easy unboxed ones to find as the format was replaced the following year.

Brief Info: Most interested collectors will know all about this title already and needs no introductions suffice to say, it was their seventh original studio album from 1968 and many consider it their very best ever. I will concentrate more on it’s condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a very fine example for one that often darkens and creases badly. A gatefold format with laminate on front and back, the ends on the top edges inside the gatefold. The inside is matt and smooth. This one has a solid, no peep-hole back and with a quite wide spine. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse International Ltd.

Lamination, Front & Back: Like The Beatles’ ‘White Album’, this is usually seen more an off-white these days and this is no exception, but only mildly so. Faint traces of natural toning and now a nice shade of off-white that gives that authentic vintage look. The laminate retains a lovely shine, clarity and freshness and all is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters. A few fine creases only with just moderate ones near the left bottom corner of the back. Even under angled light, there is minimal evidence of any friction rubs or dulling and any surface impressions are few, fine and faint. The gold edges are neat and generally crisp and devoid of the chipping and scuffing that regularly occur. Overall, this is a very impressive Beggar’s Banquet genuine mono cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault at all, this inside is almost exceptional and very fresh. Just a few fine surface half moon creases towards the right edge. The laminate ends on the top edges are incredibly neat with no pulling and even here, this laminate retains superb shine with no grubbiness.

Top Edges: Both smooth, straight and unworn.

Bottom Edges: Superb: these storage edges are exceptional. The gold ink superbly protected under unscuffed laminate. Rarely, if ever seen these better.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with minimal traces of any wear. No feathering, softening and practically devoid of thickening or burring. Record enters on the open back, just one minor ‘curl’ on a small area near the bottom of the back as seen when viewed end-on.

Spine and Text: This has the wide upright style spine, later they became narrower and more rounded. Most will flatten, shed the laminate and the text become eroded and often lost. This one has only lightish compression but is still erect and not flattened. Minimal discolouration and the laminate unpeeled and solid. Hence ALL the text is fully present and unworn. Being wide and this format, some creasing is almost unavoidable and tatty spine on this cover are well-known. Compared to many I have seen, this is very solid and still straight, not perfect, but it will never prove easy to find much better. The ends are neat, crisp and equally solid with no burring or softening. This makes a considerable difference to this vulnerable area.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and light with any tip creasing the same. Very fine shape is retained and arguably better still.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this deceptively delicate cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better and remember, it must be a Garrod & Lofthouse version with an unboxed record inside with no peep hole to be early, those came alone in 1969. Not so many of those around of course. This still very attractive example should please many collectors but not quite the perfectionists. This sets a high standard.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(-): marked down a little for some moderate toning on the back. This is the inner inside the cover when I acquired it. The toning apart, this has little else to fault being hardly creased with all all edges intact and very neat. The polylining is ultra clean and with hardly any crinkle as seen through two immaculate window circles. This UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pening’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: this not really not doing this lovely record full justice. A lovely visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed on the highest quality vinyl as you would expect from Decca. A couple of light scuffs have no sound and any other marks are few, light and faint. There are no penetrating scratches on this record and I have seldom seen a much better unboxed mono copy of this album. Not for the visual perfectionist, but this scarce record also sets a very high standard.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound – that a huge and significant factor, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very impressive and full-on with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound. This leads you directly into the recording studio itself and this is first mono copy of this classic since I upgraded my LP12. This gave a wonderful performance and was a real pleasure throughout. Any surface sound registered little – a trace at the very beginning of side one for around a second (or less) and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing as you would expect from Decca. No piledriver thick, heavy stylus have ruined this one, just the way collectors want them. Any surface marks are ignored and the playing surfaces are impressive and tracing effortless. A mono record not really designed to be played on modern high-end turntables, but when they sound this fine, they are a thing of real beauty. Few available copies will match or better this early unboxed copy I feel sure, remember this is a record over 43-years-old, hardly a spring chicken in vinyl terms for sure. The joining grooves emit hardly any sound which is a another significant factor which emphasises the lack of wear to the music areas. The details gleaned from these very clean grooves even raised my eyebrows. Small details I swear I had never heard before, that’s the joy of a quality recording and system to enjoy them on. The mono mix delivers strong dynamics and impressive sonic delivery that many connoisseur’s prefer to the stereo version. But so many are ruined by heavy usage on old mono record players, often fitted with a blunt or chipped tip that shreds the groove walls. This has NOT happened on this copy and the music flows with that unique sound of the 1960s. It’s the small details that make the difference as all hi-fi fans know. I feel sure this record has not seen light-of-day for decades – it has been played, but I would be sure only modestly. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful, evergreen classic that many regard as their best ever. This record will prove difficult to find better and merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
