Since this legendary album was obviously too hot for the Stones' record label, it was released as a bootleg. The underappreciated Mick Taylor sounds great throughout. Highlights are Eric Clapton sizzling on "Brown Sugar" and Keith Richards sounding more like Pete Townshend in a scorched-earth live version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash." Mick Jagger has never sounded as mournful as on the title cut, a tale of a male hooker. He even sings in Italian for "As Tears Go By." A wicked rendition of "Midnight Rambler" is cut short just before the end, as if the bootlegger's tape ran out. Too bad; it sounds like the Stones were moments away from a fearsome finish. If you can overlook the iffy sound and idiotic liner notes, this album is well worth having. Good luck finding it.
