Even though this session was only Kirk's third full-length outing, it was his most soulful excursion to date, reinforcing the not-so-subtle influence and fusion of R&B into post-bop jazz. The disc opens on the bluesy "Three for Dizzy," allowing Kirk and McDuff to effortlessly bandy licks behind the limber rhythm section. Keen-eared listeners can hear early and comparatively subdued signals from Kirk's whistle-like siren as he indicates the solos, commencing with some trademark buoyant and babbling from McDuff's swelling Hammond B-3. A frisky reading of the Sammy Kahn co-composition "Makin' Whoopie" significantly lightens the mood, sporting melodic sax leads that weave optimistically alongside of McDuff's eager -- yet never overtly anxious -- interplay. Kirk also breaks out his arrestingly inventive derivation of the alto sax, called a manzello -- which he performs simultaneously and in harmony with his tenor sax -- giving the impression of two respective players. Kirk's self-made stritch is a second-generation B flat soprano sax unleashing the unique tonality heard on the dizzyingly giddy reworking of Waldteufel's "Skater's Waltz." Benjamin's incessant basslines adhere to Taylor's mindful and economical trap-keeping, undergirding the malleable bed as the leaders bob and dive within the familiar melody. The title track "Funk Underneath" prominently features Kirk's hypnotically fragrant flute, which he contrasts with copious squeaks and squawks around McDuff's earthy intonations. "Doin' the Sixty-Eight" is another strong original as the seductive groove provides more than a hint of a breezy syncopated Latin vibe. "Kirk's Work" is a fitting moniker as the multi-instrumentalist trades some highly spirited blows with McDuff's cool and cerebral contributions. Whether it's as Funk Underneath or Kirk's Work, fans of Rahsaan Roland Kirk should avail themselves of this seminal entry.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-        Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
