Those who think they know "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" from the Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird" are kidding themselves, and also cheating themselves, because they haven't heard Carl White's stunning, soaring, magnificent lead (adjectives that hardly would seem appropriate to the song as the Trashmen did it). Doin' the Bird opens with the Rivingtons' classic original, and it gets better from there, with the soulful and suggestive "Love Pill," which is almost as good a showcase for Al Frazier's baritone and Matthew Nelson's bass as it is for White, and their a cappella rendition of "Long Tall Sally," which might be the best rendition this side of the original. "Unchain My Heart" is entertaining filler and "You Are My Sunshine" is an attempt to apply the "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" treatment to the old Gene Autry hit, with considerable success, while "Happy Jack" is a catchy group original with glorious ensemble singing and barely audible drum, piano, and guitar accompaniment. "Mama-Oom-Mow-Mow" is more syllabic zaniness from this incomparable quartet, while "Kickapoo Joy Juice" carries the vocal acrobatics a step further, with trumpet flourish accompaniment, and "Slippin' and Slidin'" is an even more radical deconstruction of a Little Richard song on purely vocal terms than "Long Tall Sally" was. "Old Time Love" is almost tame by comparison, as a soaring R&B ballad, while "Have Mercy, Mercy Baby" is a quicker-tempo workout in a freer flowing vein. And "Standing in the Love Line" rounds out the album in the most conventional possible mode, a Motown-style ballad that might've been a good vehicle for the Four Tops and isn't bad here, either.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMOS, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            WE GRADE THE VINYL AS BORDERLINE NEAR MINT. This album probably does not qualify to be graded NEAR MINT by using stringent, rigorous grading – but, in our opinion, it is very close to NEAR MINT. At our own risk, we will grade it as NEAR MINT, but be forewarned: if you are rigorous and demanding collector, this album may be VG++ for your standards, or below your expectations. Some light abrasions and sleeve scuffs are visible, but are probably not sufficient to significantly lower the overall grade. Please inquire if you need more information.

(b)            The label on one side of the record has visible yellowing / staining

(c)             White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.

(d)            In addition, Stereo pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(e)             The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(f)              The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(g)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has a small peel-off mark (in the letters R and D in the word “BIRD”) which was delicately retouched (camouflaged) with a like-colored (black) marker by the previous owner.

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 and (front side) and 4 (back side).

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel

-         Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a small date stamp on the back panel

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No split seams

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-         No writing

-         No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-         No mold or mildew spots
