After delivering their second album for USA label Atlantic Records, the band had a nasty surprise. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap – as its title clearly implied – was so rough-and-ready, so unpalatable to mainstream tastes, that ATLANTIC RECORDS refused to release it in the USA, yet another major label corporate office decision - a disaster decision at that. By the way - how do these guys get hired in the first place? But then again, if you wanted the album, it was kinda cool to be forced into having to locate this Australian first press with the superior cover of cartoon-ish band members images.
Meanwhile, substandard executive think-tank decision holders huddled together; then some years later "Dirty Deeds..." finally got its U.S.A. release - but only after the band hit it big in the '80s. Indeed, the U.S. copy surfaced with totally dumb artwork graphics, easily registering at the bottom-of-the-barrel in creative artistry.
Here we have, the ORIGINAL 1976 AUSTRALIAN release, hard to find so CLEAN!
So, while AC/DC were living the life as a huge success in their Australian homeland, USA Atlantic Records had a point. The figured "Dirty Deeds..." was never going to be a hit, or so they thought(!) 'cause its menacing title track has endured as a radio and teen angst staple for generations of rock fans.
ELSEWHERE, amid the lewd, crude driving heaviness that lands in your lap, smutty "Big Balls," right royally rams you into the blistering Rocker, with Bon self-mythologising as a ‘right-out-of-controller’ – and then there is a glimpse of the man behind the myth in the sorrowful "Ride On."
Such is the fact : “Dirty Deeds..." is a tremendous record, arguably Scott’s best with AC/DC. And THAT claim hinges on a song that’s atypical for the band: Ride On, the best bluesy ballad you’re ever likely to hear. Yet normal AC/DC service gets immediately resumed with the rip-snorting title track and the mischievous Problem Child. But following Scott’s death in February 1980, the desolate, searching spirit embodied by Ride On took on new meaning and significance. And that’s why "Dirty Deeds..." will always be about that particular song.”
Oh, but there is SO much more....
When "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" was eventually reconfigured for the 'tender' U.S.A. ears, it ended up reaching No. 3, going multi platinum. Today, it remains one of AC/DC's most popular albums, with , of course, with their driving force: Bon Scott.
