Limited edition from Detroit made some time ago, long out of print with transparent RED wax of the legendary SONIC RENDESVOUS BAND...led by Fred Sonic Smith, 2nd guitar/vocalist with the legendary MC5

Most people would recognize the name Fred "Sonic" Smith only for his role as guitarist of Ann Arbor's legendary late '60's/early '70's pre-punk band the MC5. But by the second half of the '70's, Smith was "kickin out the jams" with Sonic's Rendezvous.

The group was a veritable Ann Arbor-Detroit all-star ensemble: Scott Morgan, once the Rationals' frontman, shared vocal/songwriting duties with Sonic and brilliantly handled rhythm guitar chords; drummer Scott "Rock Action" Asheton pounded skins with Iggy & the Stooges; and bassist Gary Rasmussen, was a member of local icons The Up.

Although Sonic's Rendezvous only laid down one single in the studio over the course of their five-year existence, an April 1978 show at the Second Chance (now the Nectarine Ballroom) was captured in all its raw power. Digitally edited frm the original tapes and newly released, this live recording sounds vital and crisp.

This is hard rock at its best: energy, emotion, power and no frills. The songs seem to leave enough room for Sonic's lead guitar improvisations while still remaining taut and muscular. This long gone LP release has guitar chords galore, and because of their expert restraint, the immense talents of Fred and Scott complement each other perfectly. To top it off, both singers punctuate the heavy music with strong, power-soul vocals.

All but one of the songs - a Stones cover - are blistering originals. Morgan's songs convey a melodic '60's rock feel, while Sonic's songs are more punk-meets-hard rock. It's quite commendable that the Rendezvous' longer songs, "City Slang" and the title track, maintain their tempos and high energy throughout a full seven and eight minutes. Driven by a pure love of rock'n'roll, "Sonic" Smith and Morgan's guitars simply shred through 10 tracks, leaving a ringing in the listener's ear to remind them of the power of so-called rudimentary rock when it's brandished by masters of the art. It's only a small corner of the rock legacy Smith left behind, but it's something to marvel at.

Scarce in it's first pressing release - - grab it --  before it goes "through the roof"
