Description
I inherited this Lp from my dad. Researching this copy was tricky. This is a mono 1959 copy that appears to have been sold as overstock by the short-lived, budget label launched by Prestige in fall of 1964 called Status Records. Status sold overstock Prestige and New Jazz LPs by simply adding a black stylized S sticker to the front of the jacket covering the original Prestige or New Jazz label name, (see front cover pic). There is no other indication of "stereo" on this copy. The disk features the Prestige yellow "fireworks" (deep groove) labels. "HI FIDELITY" is printed to the right of the spindle hole where the 1959 stereo version would normally state "STEREO".
SLEEVE: As is the case with many mono and stereo releases from the late 50s - mid 60s, the artwork used for this mono release is simply the artwork of the stereo release, which reads "PRESTIGE STEREO", but of which the stereo part was folded over the top edge of the front cover so it would not be visible on mono releases. A part of the stereo part can still be seen though, upside down, at the top of the back cover, (see pic).
The artwork appears to gotten offset in the printing process because the spine text wraps around to the back side instead of appearing on the spine.
I'm not an expert record grader but I would say both the disk and the sleeve are VG+. The vinyl still has good shine. There are a few hairlines, one which is more than a hairline but is not sonically apparent and can't be felt. There are a couple of small, light smudges. The whole record makes for an enjoyable listen even though it plays with a fair amount of surface noise. It plays through fine with no skips or tics. The noise seems to get louder on cut 2, side A, but for the most part, the signal to noise ratio is good enough to enjoy the music. There are a few sparse light pops.
I believe the cover rates a VG+. There are no corner bumps, average ring wear, and although there's shelf wear, it still presents well. There is a two inch split on the top edge next to the spine and on the top of the spine. If you look closely, you can also see a 2" split starting to form on the bottom of the spine. The bottom edge is pretty good, no splits. I don't think the plain inner sleeve is original.
