Ray Charles - At Newport - 140 GRAM HQ VIRGIN VINYL BONUS LP -

Featuring live versions of "I Got A Woman," "The Right Time" and more!

For his appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 5, 1958, Ray Charles pulled out all the stops, performing raucous versions of "The Right Time," his massive hit "I Got A Woman" and "Talkin' 'Bout You." Featuring (a.o.) Bennie Crawford on baritone sax, David "Fathead" Newman on tenor sax and the Raylettes on backing vocals, the band is really on fire. The detailed liner notes on the album were written by Kenneth Lee Karpe.

RAY CHARLES CLASSIC RECORDS Porgy & Bess 200 Gram 2 Sealed LP -

This is the famous version of Porgy and Bess that was supposed to have Gladys Knight singing the part of Bess. When Ray Charles offered the part to Gladys, having just come of the hit "Midnight train to Georgia", her manager at the time, would only allow her to participate if she owned the masters. According to Ray, he said, "well now you know that just won't be possible" to which her manager responded that she wouldn't be available. Ray told me that his mother taught him the meaning of "NO" and hence he asked Cleo Laine, who did a beautiful job of singing the part.

Ray was also in top form as this 2 LP edition mastered from the original analog masters shows very clearly. Now available on 200g Quiex Super Vinyl Profile for the first time. A must have!

1. Summertime - Ray Charles 2. My Man's Gone Now - Cleo Laine 3. Woman Is a Sometime Thing - Ray Charles 4. They Pass by Singin' - Cleo Laine 5. What You Want Wid Bess? - Cleo Laine 6.  Ray Charles What'd I Say 180g LP (Mono)

180 GRAM Audiophile Vinyl Mastered by Kevin Gray From Original Monophonic Atlantic Records Tapes!

Ray Charles was the premier architect singer/songwriter/musician whose “genius” of combining jazz, blues with gospel most certainly began the American soul music movement. This modern form of R&B which would become an American way of life forever etched itself in total with the release of his 1959 classic hit single and album What’d I Say.

Fused with heavy blues, gospel and rock and roll, What’d I Say was one of Ray’s very first top ten hits after a very long run of predominantly R&B only chart successes. The tune itself has been covered hundreds of times by some of the most important voices in popular music, like The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Van Morrison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many others.

Also included on this masterpiece are some of Ray Charles more refined blues rockers like the powerful instrumental Rockhouse, the rockin’ You Be My Baby, the shouter Tell Me How Do You Feel, and the brilliant pre-soul sounds of What Kind Of Man Are You which features the Raylettes’ Mary Ann Fisher.

The What’d I Say album forever etched the name superstar and genius with Ray Charles as the album reached the upper rungs of the popular, jazz and R&B charts and has become an American institution which will forever stand the test of time.

GENIUS SINGS THE BLUES MFSL LIMITED EDITION AND INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED - Numbered, Limited Edition!

This 1961 collection gathers 12 must-have songs from Charles' peak era. Mobile Fidelity has righted the sonic wrongs that plagued earlier versions. You won't find a better-sounding Ray Charles disc.

Genius doesn’t even begin to describe the greatness of The Genius Sings the Blues. Comprised of a dozen songs Ray Charles made between 1952 and 1960, the collection was released in 1961 by Atlantic Records to counter the singer’s migration to rival ABC Paramount. What Atlantic originally underestimated is that the album contained many of Charles’ greatest works, all unified by their bluesy emotions and stirring arrangements. A classic of the soul and R&B canon, The Genius Sings the Blues is a snapshot of the evolution of timeless American music captured by the pianist’s indelible rhythmic pace, gospel roots, jazz backgrounds, and Southern-styled accents. And it’s never sounded so good.

From the iconic cover art (a photo of Charles taken by legendary photographer Lee Friedlander) to the distinguished music within, everything about the thematic record is iconic. Now, nearly 50 years later, it can be heard in pristine fidelity sourced from the original master tapes. Mobile Fidelity’s engineers have taken great pains to ensure that every clink of the piano keys, ache of Charles’ rolling voice, and rush of the backing arrangements sounds better than they have since first being recorded in the studio.

Previous editions of The Genius Sings the Blues suffered from varying levels, distracting static and noise, and inconsistent vocal balances. Mobile Fidelity has gone back to the master tapes to correct these problems, giving music lovers what is now unquestionably the best-sounding Charles album to stem from his peak era. And he’s simply on fire.

Whether inhabiting the sadness in “Night Time (Is the Right Time)” or personifying the loss of “Hard Times,” Charles invests each song with supreme emotion and undeniable conviction that makes the lyrics ring true and the blues resonate with cathartic pathos. Uptempo country blues numbers (“I’m Movin’ On, “Early in the Mornin’”) balance the mournful slow fare, and again prove Charles a master composer, interpreter, and musician who could make any style his own. The Genius Sings the Blues also speaks to legendary jazz pianist Billy Taylor’s initial impressions of Charles upon hearing him in a way in which few other Charles recordings do.

Taylor recalled: “While playing through some new music for a projected Ruth Brown record date, I was asked to listen to an original song played and sung by a young composer and pianist from Seattle, Washington. I can still remember how surprised I was to hear this kind of music from a Northwesterner. He reminded me of Charles Brown, another pianist-singer who was very popular in the Forties, but he had a very personal sound and there was something different about his rhythmic approach. In his handling of melody he seemed to be using devices similar to those used by Dinah Washington and a small group of popular singers who allowed their gospel singing backgrounds to influence their interpretation of popular songs... I was intrigued by the emotional quality projected by both his piano playing and his unusual voice and was not surprised when Ahmet Ertegün said that he wanted to let the young musician record some of his own material. ‘He communicates just like the old blues singers,’ Ahmet said.

Indeed, that innate blues aesthetic dominates this collection, as does Charles’ distinctive rhythmic mannerisms. Finally, hear them as they’ve always been intended to be experienced.

"Mobile Fidelity has now remastered the original mono master tape-revealing both its beauty and its warts with startling clarity. The beauty, of course, lies in the music." - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound Magazine, April 2011, Issue 212

Ray Sings Basie Swings combines archival, never-before-heard Ray Charles vocal recordings with brand new performances by the Count Basie Orchestra. This groundbreaking release gives listeners the unprecedented experience of hearing Ray Charles at the dazzling peak of his vocal prowess. Ray Sings Basie Swings was created with the most up-to-date recording and mixing technology, offering sound quality that is state-of-the-art.

The producers of this project discovered archival reels of Ray Charles and the Count Basie Orchestra performing live together in 1973. Although the vocals were superior, the remaining elements were of extremely poor quality. They decided to bring the current Basie Orchestra into the studio and, using the latest technology, they carefully and painstakingly laid down a new instrumental backdrop for Charles' towering vocals.

This album is comprised of 12 vintage recordings unearthed from the master tape vaults. The 'Genius' Ray Charles sings as he is backed by none other than the Count Basie Orchestra for some truly extraordinary music. Modern technology has made it possible to recreate and re-record these beauties under the direction of Bill Hughes for one swingin' record!

AUDIOPHILE COLLECTORS BONUS - Ray Charles The Genius After Hours Numbered Limited Edition Hybrid Stereo SACD

Ray Charles The Genius After Hours on Numbered Limited Edition SACD from Mobile Fidelity!

1961 Instrumental Set True to Its Name: The Sound of Charles Letting Loose in an Intimate Jazz Club

Intimate Affair Finds Legendary Pianist Pairing With Small Combos, Exploring Bluesy Sides

The Definitive Edition: Mobile Fidelity Hybrid SACD Boasts Unprecedented Sonic Clarity

Long Out-of-Print Album Restored and Renewed

There’s no doubting Ray Charles became a legend only after moving to Atlantic Records where, in the mid and late 1950s, he rung up a string of hits that redefined popular music and gave birth to R&B. Yet the label refused to shoehorn Charles into strictly sticking with vocal fare. Recognizing his jazz and blues roots, Atlantic both permitted and encouraged him to record instrumental sides with jazz combos and pursue piano-based material with which he was originally associated.

Mastered from the original master tapes, and restored to a quality that hasn’t been realized since the initial pressings more than 50 years ago, Mobile Fidelity’s hybrid SACD version of The Genius After Hours takes its place as one of the most unsurpassed-sounding examples of Charles’ first love affair: jazz and blues. Opening up the veil onto these early 1960s sessions, the collector’s disc functions as a tableside-seat at a smoky jazz club where, for sheer fun and amusement, Charles gathers with a handful of cohorts and lets loose with hard-bop standards and swinging rhythms. The cavity of Charles’ instrument, acoustic signatures of the stand-up bass lines, and swish of the percussion are all presented with unfettered realism.

Taken from the same three studio gatherings that yielded The Great Ray Charles, the eight tunes here feature the icon pairing with both a trio and a septet. Longtime collaborator David “Fathead” Newman plays tenor and alto sax, while trumpeter Joseph Bridgewater and bassist Oscar Pettiford also contribute memorable performances. Hall of Fame producer Quincy Jones handles the arrangements on the bigger-band tracks. Yet the star of the program remains Charles, and the carefree, charming manner in which he causes the music to move in any direction he wills.

Refreshingly easygoing and naturally soulful, Charles plays in time with his mates, cozying up to the ivories whether responding to Newman’s brassy currents or reacting to the be-bop sway on “Joy Ride.” Slightly removed from the gospel trademarks of his more commercial fare, Charles burrows into the blues, engaging in back-and-forth dialog with the brushed drums on “Dawn Ray” and laying down countermelodies on arrangements in the septet setting. Close your eyes, and you’re feet away from Ray and the boys at an intimate 3 A.M. gathering in a small club in New York’s Greenwich Village!
