The Beatles vs. The Four Seasons Rare Vee Jay DX30 2 Record Set Mono
Scarce 2 LP Set that is hard to find in displayable condition. This is in better condition than you normally find with only a few minor condition issues. To be sure, while this album does surface, it rarely surfaces in collectible condition due to not only the fact that it is 60 years old, but also that mostly youngsters owned these and most were lost over time due basic attrition (thrown out during clean outs, lost to damage from improper storage, etc). No doubt about it, this is one of the coolest albums released by Vee Jay.
This was yet another cash grab and repackaging by Vee Jay to capitalize on the explosion of primarily The Beatles but also the Four Seasons in 1964. Specifically, Vee Jay wanted to once again milk the profits of "Introducing The Beatles" and came up with this gimmick 2 LP set. By the time this came out, most fans had already bought "Introducing" and were not swayed by this dubious repackaging effort by the label that was looking down the barrel of Capitol Records quickly taking over The Fab Four's future and the subsequent termination of VJ's manufacturing contract with the band. Vee Jay was already in litigation when this LP was released in August of 1964 and the album has been reported as not even reaching the Billboard Top 100 and as selling less than 20,000 copies. Supposedly, less than 800 Stereo copies were shipped making that particular version excruciatingly rare. While the set in this auction is MONO and not quite as rare, how many of these have actually survived the past 60 years ? This far more rare than 2nd or 3rd state Butcher covers although admittedly not quite as desirable to collectors due to the bizarre/controversial nature of the Butcher Cover artwork. Still, this is such a cool album and the artwork screams FUN !
Most teenagers enjoyed these records and played them on low cost players and did not treat them as collectibles. As a result, many of these are thrashed and many copies also have the back of the jacket score card filled out or other serious issues like water damage ect.. While this is not a near mint set, it's a nice copy without writing or an over abundance of major condition issues regarding the jacket. Records are not near mint either but decent and play well. The main value (of course with this set) is in the jacket more than the records.
Specific Condition :
Jacket: Decent clean condition with minimal/light wear on front and back. Beautiful graphics. No check marks on the score card on the back cover ! Likewise, seams are not too bad and have a few marks, chips and a few inches of seam split/repairs with paper hinging tape on top seams near the mouth opening which is common on these. Bottom seams appear complete without any issue.
Please note: Records should be stored separately from the jacket and not be placed inside the album cover to protect the seams. (Please see front, back and seam photos).
Vinyl: Records are conservatively graded these VG+ to VG- at best. Both LP's play through well without skips, pops or other disturbances but both exhibit some sleeve scratches and scuffs. Still both have lots of shine left and were an enjoyable play.
Comes with original Vee Jay inner sleeves as shown with some wear and tear.
There is No Poster included with this set and the inner sleeves will be fresh generic white sleeves.
Please Note: Beatles T-Shirt seen in background of photos is NOT included in this auction.
This will be shipped via priority mail double boxed for safe transit.
