If you're a record collector, a Blues collector, or just interested in rarities, then you likely already know what this represents. This is an extremely rare Edison label "Race Record" Blues record (note that the label plainly states "Race Record" directly above each artist's name). Edison the man was known to despise blues and did not allow his studios or engineers to conduct the recording of blues. It has been reported that Blues recordings were made after hours, or when Edison wasn't around to inhibit such recordings. This record is "Memphis Bound" by Viola McCoy on one side, accompanied by the Kansas City Five. The other side is "Don't Advertise Your Man" by Rosa Henderson, also backed by the Kansas City Five. This is bona-fide blues - not faux-blues like some records - the real deal. Both sides play very well - Edison records have quite a bit of surface noise, especially upon lead-in, but the music on these sides is loud and clear, and pretty much rides above the disc noise of typical Edisons. The McCoy side presents very well, the label and record make a nice display. The Henderson side label suffers from the abrasions seen in the picture, and the record has a scuff which did not seem to affect play; no skips or audible effect - it's a surface scuff. If you know records, then you know what this represents. I am downsizing a huge record collection due to space limitations - I've simply run out of room and more stuff comes into the house. Don't miss this artifact of Americana... an authentic Edison "Race Record" - stated plainly on the label. An extraordinary addition to African-American studies and musicology. And need I add - damn fine blues music. Check the rasp on the horn on the McCoy side. Very few of these records are around in any condition and collectors are lucky to stumble on one in a lifetime.
