Description
This is a very rare 5" Berliner grammophon record made around 1889 or 1890. It dates to the very beginning of disc recordings, when the first records were made following the invention of the gramophone by Emile Berliner who was issued a patent for his invention in 1887.
This disc is number 23 and from what I can make out, the title is By Thy Cold Breast etc. (Byron, Manfred). I assume that the recording might be a recitation from Lord Byron's 'Manfred', a dramatic poem written in 1816 - 1817. The disc also has D.R.P 45048 stamped on it.
The record is from the deceased estate of a phonograph collector who had it on display on his wall for almost 50 years in less than ideal conditions and it has suffered because of it. However this represents an affordable opportunity for you to own one of these exceptionally rare records.
The record is completely original. The colour of it has changed to a 'milk chocolate' brown colour due to exposure to sunlight, it is warped and it has split. I'm not an expert in restoration, however I believe that it could be carefully restored and a rare item such as this is certainly worth spending some time on.
The original paper label on the reverse side has gone.
