Description

Welcome to my new-look soul sales.

Once again, I've had a revision of how I intend to sell some of my very large collection in the future, and have decided to be more ruthless in what I sell and what I keep. I haven't the equipment (or the intelligence) to provide my own sound clips, so will have to rely on your own good judgement - after all, soul lovers are the world's most knowledgeable and devoted collectors.

There will be some real gems, so make sure you keep your eyes open.

I need some readies to feed my record-buying habit, so here's a scarce UK release.

70s NORTHERN SOUL

DONALD HEIGHT

"DANCING TO THE MUSIC OF LOVE"

b/w

"RAGS TO RICHES TO RAGS"

(UK: Avco Embassy 6105 005, 1971)

Record conditon: Excellent ++

Labels condition: Spotless (made with large centre)

I've already got rid of this singer's two UK London releases - "Talk Of The Grapevine" and "365 Days". Britain then had to wait four years before seeing another 45 bearing the name of Donald Height. On paper, you wouldn't have expected this single to have been any more collectable than the two Stylistics records that it was sandwiched in between. However, 'on paper' is an apt phrase, because it sold so poorly that the Avco bosses never saw fit to repress it. Therefore, it never get one of those tasteless inkjet labels that every Stylistics fan will know. I think it's the only Avco single to only have a paper label, and it dates from the period when large US-style centres were common.

The single came out on the Honey label in the US, and was written and produced by our old friend, Teddy Vann. "Rags To Riches To Rags" stomps along in typical 60s fashion, and may have been recorded a while earlier. The official A-side is another uptempo dancer, with entirely different writer/producer credits. It's very much in the style of The Drifters.

This one is valued at £100 by Manship in his UK Guide, and even the more conservative Record Collector admits it to be a good £75. I'm going to start this considerably lower.

The vinyl has just a few very light "spiders webs", and both sides play very close to excellent +++. Both labels are beautiful, and the edges are completely chip-free.

It comes in my own personalized card cover.
