Rare 1941 Library of Congress LP Folk Music of Brazil AFS L13. Vinyl is in solid MINT CONDITION. This is a rare record to start with and in this condition is an incredible find. The cover has cellophane tape along the bottom seam. The other two seams are perfect with no splits or tears. Edited by Melville J. Herskovits and Frances S. Herskovits. This comes with the 15 page 9" x 6" booklet that explains in great detail the songs, the contents, the field recordings, the people singing them. Text from reverse side of LP: "The Archive of Folk Song in the Library of Congress has, since 1928, been the chief repository in the United States for field recordings of American folk songs. As a result of the wide interest in its work, the Archive has also acquired - through gift, exchange, and field collecting projects - folk song material from many areas of Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and elsewhere. From this extensive collection, the Library; of Congress has over a period of years issued selected recordings for the use of universities, libraries, students, and other interested individuals. These albums and long playing records include traditional sea shanties, authentic songs of the cowboy, songs of the Mormons, ballads of the Civil War, Anglo-American songs and ballads, Negro work songs and spirituals, fiddle and banjo tunes, songs of many Indian tribes, and also folk songs and music of Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. These traditional songs, recorded with portable equipment in the field, are sung and played by people who have learned them in the folk tradition from their parents or neighbors. The singers are untrained musically, and their voices reflect the hills and plains of America rather than the broadcasting studio or the concert stage. This is not in any sense to minimize their worth, but, on the contrary, to point up the unique value of the recordings, for through them is preserved for the American people the pure tradition of folk song. Leaflets accompanying each of the long playing records supply transcriptions of the texts of the songs together with information about their origin and background , and include references to authoritative books and leading scholarly articles in order that the student may further pursue his study in the different fields of American folk song. To the collectors who have given unselfishly of their time to record these songs, and to the singers who freely cooperated with them, we owe a continuing debt of gratitude. Without their effort, and without their recognition of the value of the material to out history and traditions, the great majority of of these songs would have disappeared forever.
