Mario SAMMARCO ( Palermo 1868 – Milano 1930)

A pupil of Antonio Cantelli in Milan, Sammarco made his debut there (1888) as Valentino in Gounod’s Faust. At La Scala he created the role of Gerard in the world premiere of Giordano’s Andrea Chenier in 1896. Active in Russia, America ( The Manhattan, Boston and Chicago Operas) , England, Spain and South America. Sammarco included in his repertoire Scarpia ( he was among the first baritones to sing the role) , Iago, Rigoletto, his particular interest as his career advanced having been verismo parts. Other of his creations were the principal roles in Leoncavallo’s Zaza (Teatro Lirico, 1900) , Franchetti’s Germania ( La Scala 1902) and Victor Herbert’s Natoma ( Chicago, 1911)

E Excellent. Virtually no trace of groove wear with only minimal traces of use and handling.

E = Record with slight degree if groove wear, but not enough to seriously detract from its audio quality.

V + + Obviously well played but still enjoyable. Noticeable greying in the grooves

V + Very well worn but listenable Expect the surface noise to be significant. There may be stressed grooves.

V Stressed grooves more pronounced.
