here’s a bit of background on Mojo , Rob Greaves & The Generator:
Born in Zambia, Mojo or David N'Tondwe, arrived in Australia in the
early '60's. Brought up on a diet of Classical, African and Jazz, Mojo's
musical tastes rapidly developed in response to the new sounds of
Rock, R&B and pop being broadcast on the airwaves.
Starting out on classic guitar he went on to explore and enjoy the wide
sonic and stylistic capabilities of the instrument, immersing himself in the
recordings and scores of Segovia, Django, Charlie Byrd, Ali Akbar Khan (sarod),
Josh White and Bert Jansch et al. However, it was the musical style and genius
of Jimmy Hendrix and the range of sounds that Hendrix was able to extract from
the Fender he so loved and tortured that really sparked a desire to master
the electric guitar.
This musical journey into the world of sonic texture, as opposed to the conventional
12-tone tyranny that constrains and defines the structure and form of 'music',
lead to an appreciation of the early works of Pink Floyd (who proved however to
be too rigid and ultimately conservative within their albums for his taste) and the
electro-whackery/whimsicality of Planet Gong.
By the early to mid 70's, other groups began their odyssey into synthesizers.
The majority simply attempted to graft these space-age instruments onto formulated
rock outfits, such as the likes of Rick Wakeman and ELP. They were no more than mundane
styles of rock music using synths with poor application. However, other outfits such
as the German outfit Guru Guru, Nina Hagen and ground breaker Klaus Schultz,
began to play and compose in a more original manner, creating tracks that caught
Mojo's ear.
However, Mojo's taste in music was truly diverse. While this major reformation of music,
ala the use of synthesizers, was taking place, he still found the desire to listen to and
develop a strong feel for the more rhythmic styles that were closer to his own roots.
The likes of Osibissa, Hugh Masekela and the many forms of reggae/ska/kwela music
were being absorbed and integrated into his own music.
By 1976, Mojo, along with long time friend Rob Greaves, co-founded of one
of Australia's first electronic groups, Rainbow Generator, which went on to become
more than simply an electronic music band. Highly original, this duo prized innovation,
texture of sound and the strong use of polyrhythmic arrangements over the predominant
popular constructs and music idioms.
By late 1977 Mojo had moved his musical base from Melbourne to Sydney where
he opened the 'Lectric 'Loo. Located in Woolloomooloo, this studio quickly turned
into one of Sydney's (and Australia's) first true underground theaters. Initially a 2-track
studio, it hosted the development of some of the best and most innovative electronic
music in Australia.
In 1978 Rainbow Generator released their first album entitled Dance Of The Spheres.
The belief that Mojo and Rob had in their music was rewarded when later that year the
lead track from the album, "Polyploid aSpex", won the prestigious
Roland International Music Award, for the most innovative electronic composition
of the year.
