Several years to sleep off the nefarious activities of the 90s led to the eventual re-emergence of Slab. No army of engineers, A&R men, or label heads demanding singles this time, aligned behind the missionaries at Tee Pee records doing the devil’s good work, Greg and Elyse are free to molest and violate blues and boogie polyrhythms to their heart’s desires.
Despite the change of environment, the album takes up right where 1996s “Sing Monkey Sing” left off. Guitars are fuzzed-out and detuned to levels of pure depravity, riffs and basslines crisscross and stutter-step like drunk cats on a piano. Las Vegas drum prodigy Rob Cournoyer is particularly noteworthy, keeping bizarro boogie experiments like “The Ballad of Truly Mae” and “I Saw the Light” from spinning off the tracks.
Nevertheless, the album overflows with spectacular slide performances from Elyse, particularly in the cowbell-spiked cocktail “Bite the Lightning”, a track that harkens back to their earliest days of southern rock hedonism. She graces the skulking cacophony of “Roadless Rider” with loads of psych-tinged slide hoodoo. Plus their take on “When Electricity Came to Arkansas” is nothing short of a guitar orgy.
It isn’t a record for fans of straight-ahead 12-bar blues or Skynyrd approximations. The album buzzes and stings like a horsefly. Even so, expect copious hooks to bury themselves deep in your feeble brain for months . Fans of twisted genius like Drunk Horse and The F*&^%$g Champs should have a field day with this one. RIP Elyse Steinman.
