The Bends is the second studio album by Radiohead. In 1995, two years after an incredible debut in Pablo Honey, Radiohead were under tremendous pressure to deliver. Much to the delight of critics and fans the world over, they did more than deliver—they far exceeded expectations.

Building from the sweeping, three-guitar attack that punctuated the best movements of Pablo Honey, The Bends is grand and forceful; it resonates with anguish and despair. Although the influences—R.E.M., the Pixies, and U2—are still there, this is unmistakenly Radiohead maturing and defining their own sound.

The band credited producer John Leckie with allowing them the freedom to do things their own way on The Bends. Added to the sonic palette are expansive soundscapes and increased experimentation with keyboard textures. But it was also Thom Yorke's tortured lyrics that give the album its distinctive edge, a melancholy undercurrent, hauntingly melodic and instantly accessible. It all adds up to a brilliant package of hard rock songs and slow, atmospheric ballads.

Songwriting on The Bends is timeless, nothing short of a modern classic. It has repeatedly appeared in lists of the greatest albums of all time in various music publications, including Rolling Stone. The exploration in sonic texture and the evolution of Yorke's lyrical malaise paved the way for the future of Radiohead's career.
