Born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1958, Prince was a once-in-a-generation musical polymath. He radically rewrote the rules of popular music by blurring the boundaries between funk, rock, R&B, pop, and new wave. A virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, flamboyant showman, and fiercely independent artist, he single-handedly created the "Minneapolis Sound"—a synth-heavy, guitar-driven fusion of funk and rock.
Over a career spanning four decades, Prince functioned as a restless musical chameleon. He challenged cultural taboos with his hyper-sexual lyrics and gender-fluid image, went to war with the record industry to protect his artistic freedom, and amassed a legendary vault of thousands of unreleased songs.
This two hour special covers Prince from the beginning up to 1990 with interviews and musical rarities.
