Formed in London in 1965, Pink Floyd initially emerged as a leading force in Britain's underground psychedelic rock scene under the creative leadership of guitarist Syd Barrett. Alongside Roger Waters, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason, Barrett's whimsical, avant-garde songwriting defined their debut album. However, as Barrett's mental health deteriorated due to heavy LSD use, guitarist David Gilmour was brought in to replace him in 1968. This lineup shift forced a massive sonic evolution. Moving away from short, quirky psych-pop tracks, the band began experimenting with sprawling, atmospheric soundscapes, cinematic structures, and philosophical themes that would soon redefine progressive rock.
The 1970s marked Pink Floyd’s golden era of commercial and critical dominance, driven largely by Roger Waters' conceptual songwriting and David Gilmour's expressive, soaring guitar work. They released a string of masterworks, including The Dark Side of the Moon (1973)—which spent a record-shattering 741 weeks on the Billboard charts—Wish You Were Here (1975), and The Wall (1979). Despite their global success, severe internal tensions and creative clashes eventually fractured the band. Waters departed bitterly in 1985, but Gilmour, Mason, and later Wright continued recording and touring under the Pink Floyd name through the late '80s and '90s. Leaving behind an unmatched legacy of sonic innovation, political commentary, and legendary live visual spectacles, Pink Floyd remains one of the most influential and top-selling rock acts of all time.
