Soundgarden
Formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1984, Soundgarden was a seminal force in the alternative rock movement and a chief architect of the "grunge" sound. Fronted by Chris Cornell, whose astonishing, four-octave vocal range became one of the most celebrated voices in rock history, the band combined the sludgy, down-tuned metal riffs of guitarist Kim Thayil with the complex, unconventional time signatures of bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron. They made history as the first grunge band to sign to a major label, paving the way for the early-90s Seattle explosion before achieving massive global dominance with their 1994 masterpiece Superunknown, which featured iconic tracks like "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman." Following a hiatus and a triumphant 21st-century reunion, the band's influential run came to an end after the tragic passing of Cornell in 2017, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most innovative and heavy acts of their generation.
The Smithereens
Formed in Carteret, New Jersey, in 1980, The Smithereens carved out a unique sonic space by marrying the muscular, crunchy guitar riffs of hard rock with the infectious, melodic sensibilities of 1960s power pop. Fronted by the soulful, deep vocals of primary songwriter Pat DiNizio and backed by Jim Babjak's roaring guitar, Dennis Diken’s driving drums, and Mike Mesaros’s melodic basslines, the band bridged the gap between college alternative radio and mainstream rock. Albums like Especially for You (1986) and Green Thoughts (1988) yielded timeless, moody hits like "Blood and Roses" and "A Girl Like You," cementing their reputation as a tight, no-nonsense touring act. Despite the tragic passing of DiNizio in 2017, the surviving members have continued to keep the band's rich rock legacy alive on tour with guest vocalists like Marshall Crenshaw and Robin Wilson.
This two-hour concert set, contains one-hour segments from both bands equaling two LPs.
