Description
Formed as a result of an advertisement in "Melody Maker", this English band recorded their first album in just a few weeks after their conception. Members Shiva Jones (keyboards, vocals), Raja Ram (aka Ron Rothfield) (flute, percussion), Sambhu Baba (bass), Maha Dev (guitar), Allan Moster (lead guitar) and Jake Milton (drums) and practiced the Hindu faith and the band was tabbed as “spiritual”.They mesmerized their audiences with the chanting of mantras and had many disciples following them to every show and there were 100s of concerts and festivals. They played the first 2 Glastonbury Fayres and toured all over Europe selling out the “Royal Albert Hall” twice. They jam out with trance like mantras, but flute with heavy psychedelic guitars, wah-wah and special effects set them apart from most. Heavy religious innuendos are present on every record. Admittedly, main man Raja Ram pushed this issue with the band causing a bit of a "tiff" amongst the members. They were asked to play in the US and had heavy interest for a US record deal, but only Dev and Jones agreed. The others held out for a larger advance before they would travel and play Carnegie Hall in New York. The US deal fell through and Island records released the band. Five studio albums were released in all and are highly recommended. The first three on Island records and then RCA. Dev and Jones were fired after the release of “Indweller” then recorded their own album calling themselves “Kala”. No further albums were recorded or released, but Quintessence continued playing into the 80’s before they broke up for good. Jake Milton help to form te band “Blurt” with his brother Ted and played well into the late 1990’s. Maha Dev released one solo album and Shiva Jones continues playing as “Jones Quintessence”. Raja Ram went back home to Australia and retired from music as a used car salesmen for 10 years. But, then developed a liking for Psychedelic Trance music, formed his own record label and has released several albums of his own. He also is part of another amibient psych trance band called “Shpongle”.
This fourth Quintessence album on RCA is less than perfect. The thin UK Cover has some creases and edge wear. The Record plays with a few ticks. This one has the first live recordings "Freedom" and "Water Goddess" on side 2 which gives you an idea of how mezmerizing this band could be. Gosh, they are a great band.
