Label/Format: EMI – original format with Trident 1974 logo and this another from the Queen ‘Factory Sample’ and demo collection recently purchased. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light and faint spindle marks on side two and barely any at all on one. Side one has a ‘Factory Sample’ sticker as can be clearly seen on my scan. Totally genuine, the owner of these records clearly had connections to EMI records at this time, a few more still to follow soon.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Scarcer as an original with the fully laminated cover and Factory Samples are elusive and seldom seen or offered. Later pressings had the laminate removed with non-glossy covers.

Brief Info: Queen’s third album and now starting to sell well as the hit singles got their long-players more noticed – ‘Killer Queen’ was a very successful 45. For many, this was their finest ever album and if I really had to choose, this would be my favourite too, being far more rocky and heavy in the early years, they could even be classified as ‘progressive,’ briefly anyway, and appealed greatly to rock fans such as myself – their performance on ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’ that pre-dated even their first album is legendary. ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ was even more diverse than the previous two titles with more use of various instruments and styles but still no synthesisers as was always stated on the covers. This early copy includes a fully laminated sleeve, only shortly removed probably to save costs as even more copies were in demand after the highly popular following album ‘A Night at the Opera’. This one peaked at No 2 in the UK and kick-started their rise to super-stardom and popularity. A super copy with super-clean playing surfaces and fantastic super-fi sound quality, also a clean and shiny cover, the laminated versions really look superb. The lyric inner is also included and also varies from the later versons with different size angles to the corner cuts. This Factory Sample stickered copy has 1 / 1 mothers, that not as easy as you may think from what proved to be a very popular album.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single fully laminated format with the Trident logo on the back. Printed and made in England.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides very shiny, fresh and clear, fully adhered with no lifting, peeling or blistering. Even under light, barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling. A few very small and fine hairline edge creases that show little and barely any at all away from the sides. Any surface marks or blemishes tiny, few and faint and this is a really attractive example.

Top Edge: Unworn and including text the same as the spine.

Bottom Edge: Unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly sharp with minimal traces of thickening and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: The odd tiny tip rub trace but all practically as made with superb near mint shape retained, no dinks at all.

Cover Summary: A very impressive and attractive all-round example of this famous 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better and the FULLY laminated version always looks so much classier and better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): unlined with three angle cut corners and wide recessed opening top. Clean and attractive and barely aged at all. Any minor crease traces or nick blemishes near the opening are tiny and faint and there is barely a real crease to be seen. Untoned and any record rim impression very faint and light indeed. All edges unsplit, that is never guaranteed even from new as many were knifed by the record in transit to the retailers.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with any surface blemishes being ultra fine, few and miniscule. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic early-pressed Queen classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is fantastic with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Never to be taken for granted on this album that was soon to be mass-produced and pressing quality often suffered. I have heard several of these that crackle with pressing sounds and imperfections, this has little to fault at all. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this more elusive Factory Sample record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
