This is the original release of the legendary first LP by Portuguese psychedelic group Quarteto 1111, featured in Hans Pokora  Record Collector Dreams”. Published on the 13th February 1970, it started a revolution in the Portuguese rock world, as the music and lyrics herein were more original and creative than anything ever released up to that day!

The Portuguese political censorship commission of that period withdrew the record from the shops in a question of days after its release, and only one of the songs was permitted to be airplayed. This album was in fact a bi-conceptual project (thus the first conceptual rock album in Portugal), with half of the songs dealing with the dark side of Portuguese immigration and the other half about racism (Portugal was, at that time, fighting an inglorious war in Africa).

What you get here is a pure gem of psychedelic rock, fuelled by José Cid’s organ and harpsichord playing and also by some of his best songs. “Prólogo” and “Epílogo” are the opening and closing tracks of the album, setting the mood by way of spoken word and musical accompaniment. In between, there is the heavy funk number “A Fuga dos Grilos”, the psych freak-out of “Escravatura” (with vocal phasers), “Pigmentação”, “Uma Estrada Para a Minha Aldeia” and the folk ballads “João Nada” or “Domingo em Bidonville”. There is also a curiosity in the form of “As Trovas do Vento Que Passa”, with lyrics by poet Manuel Alegre (nowadays one of the candidates to the Portuguese Presidential elections of 2006), previously recorded by Adriano Correia de Oliveira in a Coimbra fado form and heralded as one of the anthems of Portuguese opposition to the dictatorship that ruled Portugal at that time. The lyrics of one of the last songs, “Lenda de Nambuangongo”, while musically purveying a kind of African psych rock, prevented José Cid from travelling to Angola, as its lyric portrayed the then Portuguese colony in a very realistic and violent way.

Apart from Quarteto 1111 members – José Cid (vocals, organ, harpsichord, piano, flute), António Moniz Pereira (vocals, electric guitar, acoustic Guitar, bass guitar and 12-string guitar), Mário Rui Terra (bass guitar and vocals) and Miguel Artur da Silveira (drums and percussion) – there is also a stellar cast of guest musicians. Among them, there are the violin player Carlos Zíngaro (nowadays an improviser of international fame), the late cellist Celso de Carvalho (both of them would later play on folk-prog legends Banda do Casaco, but at that time they were members  of top psychedelic group Plexus) and bass player Edmundo Silva, from the group Sheiks.
