SQ QUADRAPHONIC LP: PINK FLOYD: WISH YOU WERE HERE (PCQ 33453)

Pulled from its snuggly nest deep within my archives comes this genuine artifact of a bye-gone format of sound and storage by a band that knew how to do it up right! Released at the very end of the Quadraphonic Phollies, WISH YOU WERE HERE embodied all of the features Columbia/CBS could muster for that last great shot at reviving interest in a technology that free market confusion pretty much killed from the opening salvo. Ironically now, of course, people no longer have to be confused over four channels. They have 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 and in test phase Ultra-High Definition TV with 22 (!) channels of audio. (No, Seriously!)to be confused by.

After a decade or so with Capitol/Harvest/EMI, Floyd jumped ship to Columbia/CBS and brought their money spending fan base with them. I suppose Columbia thought that people would rush right out and buy Nice Juicey Equipment but what their focus groups didn't tell them was that all those Floyd Folk already had the NJE. Sales of hardware continued to languish and by the time ANIMALS came out in 1977, Quadraphonic was body parts and yard sales. DYNACO, Hafler, SQ, CD4, QS, EV4, UD4, UMX: DOA!

So as to the item up for bid: A near-mint First Pressing (only pressing actually; they only made one run) that's so amazingly polished that you can clearly see my reflection in the shot. Label is clean with no 'squiggles'..ya know, the marks you get when you don't line up the turntable spindle with the hole in the disc. For you matrix number fans sides 1 and 2 respectively are PQ AL33453-1B and PQ BL33453-1B mechanically stamped. Note that Columbia Records matrix numbers do not refer to which edition (1st, 2nd, etc.) a disc is but rather where it was manufactured and which master lacquer was used. In this case the letter P indicates it was made in Pittman, NJ. Pittman was the home of the CBS research facility. In other words, this disc was made at the place where SQ was invented. Talk about quality control! Folks were keeping an eye on this project.

The cover has the original blue opaque shrink-wrap as well as large round WYWH sticker with quadraphonic designation. The cover also has the SQ tag and a vintage EJ Korvettes price tag. Condition of the stickers is visible in the scans. Despite me storing this in a polybag, the shrink-wrap has, well...shrunk. This has resulted in stress tears in both the upper right and lower right of the front. These do not extend to the rear cover. Two very small holes are also visible on the front. These are from the manufacturing process and match two holes on the back cover in an identical location. Some minor cover scuffing. Shrinkage can also be seen in rear cover scan by the amount of white peeking out. Neither cover or inner sleeve have split seems or bent/crushed corners.

Not pictured, but also included, is the postcard which is in the same condition as when the disc was first released.

I am the original owner and this disc has only been played seven times since I purchased it.

As usual, Any Question? Give a Shout!

5/10/08 Scan of post card added. Note: White line in upper right is printed on the card.
