It Was Scrumdidilyumptious...In Advance!

The 1971 musical film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has become the stuff of childhood magic for many generations. Gene Wilder’s portrayal of Willy Wonka was both demented and endearing, and the art styling of the wondrous chocolate factory (largely the work of famed Disney designer Harper Goff) is now everyone’s reference for candy paradise. The score for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley with Walter Scharf, was first presented on this special advance release promotional album. It would go on to be Oscar nominated, and, with hits like “The Candy Man,” “Pure Imagination” and the ear-worm of the “Oompa Loompa” song, it remains popular—and quotable—55 years later!

With its chocolate brown (of course) cover and white promotional label, this record was sent to radio stations well in advance of the films theatrical release, with the hope that the songs’ airplay would generate lots of early audience interest. The film’s logotype is front and center, and in a particularly whimsical touch, the standard, circular Paramount Records logo in the cover’s upper right corner has had a “stick” added to it turning it into a lollipop!

There is edge wear to be found, but the cover is very presentable. The stereo record plays BEAUTIFULLY, with a bare minimum of light pops. It was a pleasure to re-visit and listen to!
