  A WEE INTRODUCTION TO PROCEEDINGS: Never thought I'd do it, but I've decided it's time to lurch into the depths of a rarely-visited, and literally dusty and cobwebbed storage space...where I've kept all the items that make up the...ummm...'legacy' of Phantom Records, the Sydney label that Dare Jennings and myself owned (and ran together from 1980 till about '85, then when Dare's Mambo enterprise was skyrocketing and he couldn't be around as much, I kinda ran it by myself till early '92, when Seb Chase came on board).   Pretty much all the stuff in the...errr...'Phantom Archives' is from 1980 to 1994 - the period when I was personally deeply involved in running the label (it got a bit messy after that, as I lost my hold on the direction of the label...but that's a-whole-nother sad tale)...let's just say this stuff is from the 'glory days' of Phantom, back when it was driven by our rampant unwavering (and somewhat blind perhaps) passion - when Dare and I put our hearts and souls into everything we did there.   It wasn't that hard really, as we started by putting out records by our friends' bands, plus both our girlfriends were lead-singers in early bands we released. We dearly loved all the bands whose records we put out and went to pretty close to every gig they played...our social world naturally enough revolved around where our girlfriends and our mates were playing...it was an absolute barrel of fun. There's a bit of a further blurble here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_Records   Anyway, here's an opportunity to buy something rare from 'the source'.   PROMO KITS   During the years from 1987 to 1990, when we'd re-vamped the label and had a flurry of Deadly Hume, Hummingbirds, Vanilla Chainsaws, Fear Of Falling, Whole World, One Million Pieces, Shrinking Violets and Even As We Speak activity (plus odd other equally wonderful releases - in my eyes at least), and when Dare had needed to reduce his input, I figured I wanted to do something a bit more special to promote these releases that I figured were so damn worthy...and I wanted to try and do it better than the major labels similar attempts...so I made promo kits for each release. I did a standard run of 70 of each of them and mailed them all over the place....to sympathetic magazines, radio stations, freelance writers...all over the world, and within Australia. I completely researched these folk and had communicated via letters/faxes/phone calls long enough with them to know they would treat these items with respect. I needed to do that coz the postage bill for the bundle of kits hovered around the $400 mark...for each and every release. A lot of extra sales were needed to cover that! I had an amazing printing ally called Andrew McHugh who was in charge of Adelaide University's printing press...he was/is a gem...he turned these things around in a few days with as much thrill and enthusiasm for what he was doing as I had...record covers, folders, posters...nothing was too difficult for him. No other indie label I knew of was doing this (obviously because it could never really be financially viable)...and I knew it'd make these releases stand out. I'd get some wonderful feedback and ended up getting awesome reviews in music mags in places like Finland, Greece, Portugal, China, Sweden, Belgium, Holland, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and in several mags each in the UK and all over the USA...plus radio charts that showed these 45s often in their Top Ten in these same countries...always above or below singles by the likes of REM, Pixies, Jesus & Mary Chain, Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr., early Nirvana and Mudhoney and the like. I'd feel vindicated when I'd see what company these humble little bands from Australia were keeping there. I did, however, lose a lot of money on each of these releases. Little did I care at the time as the shop was making just enough to cover any shortfall, and I felt I was only increasing the label's profile by this activity. In retrospect, legacy and profit are rare bed-fellows after all.   OK...moving on: in the interests of posterity I decided to keep at least two of each of these kits, and I'll continue to do so, but I was going through them all the other day and noticed a few that I'd kept an extra one or two of (I think these came about from 'Return To Sender' parcels that dribbled back in over the ensuing months post-release)...so, here below, is your chance to own one of these kits. Bear in mind that any others out there in the world are probably incomplete as stickers would be stuck, posters put up, records removed and put in station libraries...or are non-existant, long considered surplus to requirement...or were simply ditched in a frenzied clutter attack.   However...this promo kit below is 100% complete. FEAR OF FALLING Promo Kit #4 - Oct. 1991 

This is the kit for their fourth and last single. Again, yet more superb jangly melodic guitar-pop singles...these guy sounded like The Church ("Heyday"/"Starfish"-era) with female vocals...it really is a travesty that they still remain so overlooked.

OK, so here's what the kit's made up of (everything is in mint condition unless mentioned otherwise):

1. Folder - silver print on thick black 'leather-effect' textured card, with a large full-size sticker of the cover in the centre on the front...looks beautiful!

2. Record - 7" single: "Crossroads Of Reality" b/w "Acid Rain" in full-colour glossy laminated pic sleeve...this is one of the first 300 on blue vinyl...

3. Large Full-Colour Sticker - same size and design as the single cover!

4. Bio Sheet - 1 x A4 page...I remember that because their album was due out about 3 weeks after this, we didn't put the usual effort into the bio or this kit - singer Kerry artfully hand-drew some of the lyrics, mentioned the imminent album, and that was it basically...a truly great single though!

RECORDS: All vinyl is taken OUT of the cover to avoid seam splits and then both cover and vinyl are sealed in a SAFE plastic bag (ie one that can have NO effect on either cover or vinyl). Then packed in well-padded cardboard for shipping. We've NEVER had a damaged item yet.
