Description

Persian Surgery Dervishes is a recording of two live solo electric organ concerts, the first held in Los Angeles on 18 April 1971 and the second in Paris on 24 May 1972, by avant-garde minimalist composer Terry Riley, following his A Rainbow in Curved Air and In C. The two very different performances of the same composition "Persian Surgery Dervishes" are meant to show the importance of improvisation in Riley's music. Riley plays a modified Yamaha electric organ tuned in just intonation. From Wikipedia

Various commentaries on this double album>>>>

  • This is easily one of the greatest Twentieth Century masterpieces, and the fact that it's played live further increases its infinite power.
  • Beginning of this album is the sound of an L-fractal generator saying ouch as it slowly gets tumbled down a long flight of stairs.
  • This music has a timeless beauty, genres, styles and fads come and go but this will continue to inspire outside and beyond all that.
  • This curved minimalism makes love with all harmonics elements. Riley is a genius!
  • This is absolutely stunning...not the word for it. These sounds are so alive with an intelligence of their own responding to the touch of an open channel......the musician’s mind-body).
  • This is awesome. Totally enveloping.
  • Terry Riley mixes various influences from the jazz greats such as such as Coltrane & Thelonious Monk or Riley, while he adds his touch of repetitive themes, jazzy ambiences and crazy virtuoso solos, sometimes very rhythmic compositions whereas others are more "atmospheric"
  • Every tiniest fibril of my body-soul is thrilling in unison with this bewitching music!
  • Terry Riley used to play all-night concerts in Ca. in the late 60's - and I believe these were edits of much longer concerts in both locations. I'd stay up all night listening to this. Must make a tape loop of it!
  • One of the best magmatic-meditation music ever done!!
