PTARMIGAN

Please see our other auctions for other rare Canadian albums.

I’m so proud to offer one of these originals for sale, especially because Ptarmigan is universally recognised as the best folk-related album from north of the 49th parallel and also since Ptarmigan is extinct specie. Ptarmigan is, basically, the Glen Dias and Monte Nordstrom tandem, backed on this album by studio musicians (some members of Papa Bear Medicine Show) and of course jazz flutist Paul Horn, who brought the whole thing to life. Album was recorded in 1972 in Canbase studio in Vancouver, but stayed shelved until Columbia agreed to release it in 1974.

Musically, Ptarmigan convincingly fuses modern folk, eastern music and laid-back jazz to a dreamy brand of esoteric-edged hippie folk. This album will have more appeal to prog fans than psych ones because of the length and complexity of its tracks. Let’s think about early Pentangle as reference, substituting the middle-age influence to eastern, and spicing the whole with ethereal atmosphere and sea inspiriting sounds.

I will include a photocopy of a press kit promo picture along with the album.

Tracks are: Go Dancing (5:47); The Island (9:01); Vancouver (4:30); Night of the Gulls(11:01); Coquihalla (9:43).

On the Columbia label # ES 90257, 1974. Columbia label was the most active major in Canadian “underground”, with bands like Jarvis Street Revue, Riverson, It’s All Meat or Contraction.

Record is VG++: was sold to me as an EX to M- copy (and it wasn’t totally misgraded). The surface shows few scuffs and more hairlines, nothing fellable. Still shinny and appealing at first glance, the defects won’t jump at the eyes immediately. A copy that was played and which now plays EX without problem, with seldom click. Remember it’s a very rare album anyway.

Cover is VG+: seam and corner wear, light ring-wear, delete hole.

AUCTION TERMS

Bid with confidence: we grade the records we offer with integrity and accuracy, so that’s why we always list defects (if any) rather than just provide a grade. Be sure to check our current auctions for items similar to this one. We are from this school that claim that "no record can ever be mint". We don't use mint grading in our scale as we believe that, if such grade is suitable for stamps or cards, it's not realistic and applicable to record.

Shipping Costs

Shipping cost per piece will be reduced in case of multiple records wins. This cost is of course reduced if you are located inside Quebec province. Registration service is no more offered by Canadian post for small parcels. These prices are settled reflecting Canada post costs and are building-in the costs of physical shipping garnishing. For your convenience, you can buy several items to cut down on shipping cost per piece.

Regular AIR-MAIL shipping for one single record (up to 500 gr. w/mailer) to continental NORTH-AMERICA excluding Mexico is US$8. For 500 grams to 1 KG it’s US$10 (you can usually fit up to 3 LPs in the same mailer without hitting this 1 KG mark.)

Regular AIR-MAIL shipping for one single record (up to 500 gr. w/ mailer) WORLDWIDE is US$12.  For 500 grams to 1 KG it’s US$22 (you can usually fit up to 3 LPs in the same mailer without hitting this 1 KG mark.)

Regular SURFACE shipping for one single record (up to 500 gr. w/ mailer) to continental NORTH-AMERICA excluding Mexico is US$6. For 500 grams to 1 KG it’s US$8 (you can usually fit up to 3 LPs in the same mailer without hitting this 1 KG mark.)

Regular SURFACE shipping for one single record (up to 500 gr. w/mailer) WORLDWIDE is US$6. For 500 grams to 1 KG it’s US$10 (you can usually fit up to 3 LPs in the same mailer without hitting this 1 KG mark.)

Records are removed from their covers for shipping in order to prevent from seam knifing (unless it's sealed) and are covered on both sides with plastic cellular air sheet to protect them from the scary outside world. We pack in brand new proper record mailers, not in pizza boxes or used record mailers who had crossed the Atlantic 12 times. If you believe these supplementary protections aren’t enough, let us know.

Payment Options

PayPal is accepted under a 5% overcharge on top of the total cost (including shipping) to cover currency exchange. If you pay but forget to include the overcharge, we’ll be forgetting to send your LP via air-mail and will be sending it via surface.
