Another from my personal collection! An awesome sounding original (MONO UK pressing). Please note! This is not Mint. This is listed for its rarety and collectability rather than for its condition. There is general wear and tear with age and surface marks/scratches and scuffs noted on the vinyl,, which do have some adverse effect on the audio quality but this is still a very enjoyable and playable copy in my opinion. For any of those who know the records that I list on ebay would know my prime interest is the audio quality,   I  have play tested the vinyl on a top system at very loud volume importantly with a dedicated Mono cartridge. This has a true bassey feel and plays through with out distortion.  It is noted that there was isolated clicks and light pops heard on both sides, these can be heard in the recording in the player below so that you can make up your own mind. The original 1st issue Garrod & Lofthouse flipback cover is graded at excellent in my opinion. Very rarely seen for sale and very collectable.

Hear the complete album in the player below! Actual recording from the vinyl!

Procol Harum
is the eponymous debut studio album by English rock band Procol Harum.

It was released in September 1967 by record label Regal Zonophone following their breakthrough and immensely popular single "A Whiter Shade of Pale". The track doesn't appear on the original album but was included in the US issue of the album.

All songs were originally credited written to Gary Brooker (music) and Keith Reid (lyrics), except "Repent Walpurgis" written by Matthew Fisher, after works by French organist Charles-Marie Widor and German composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

In 2005, Matthew Fisher filed suit in the Royal Courts of Justice against Gary Brooker and his publisher, claiming that Fisher co-wrote the music for "A Whiter Shade of Pale". On 30 July 2009 the House of Lords issued a final verdict on the case in Fisher's favour. A lower court had ruled in Fisher's favour in 2006, granting him co-writing credits and a share of the royalties.

A higher court partly overturned the ruling in 2008, giving Fisher co-writing credit but no money. The Court of Appeal had previously held that Fisher had waited too long to bring his claim to court. The House of Lords disagreed, stating there was no time limitation for such claims. Lord David Neuberger of Abbotsbury's opinion stated: "Fisher's subsequent contribution was significant, and, especially the introductory eight bars, an important factor in the work's success...".

Procol Harum's lyricist Keith Reid told Songfacts that the music for "Conquistador" was written before the lyrics. He added that this was unusual as "99 out of 100" of the Procol Harum songs, back then, "were written the words first, and then were set to music."

Procol Harum was released in September 1967.

Though the album was recorded on multitrack, it was issued as mono-only in the UK, and in mono and rechannelled stereo in the US. Despite extensive searching, the original multitrack tapes have not been located and thus a stereo mix of the original ten tracks may never be possible. Several alternate takes, however, have been mixed into stereo and are available on CD.

The album has been repackaged and reissued many times. Two of the significant reissues are Procol Harum...Plus!, a 1998 CD compilation on the Westside label including all the songs from both the Deram and Regal Zonophone release, plus "Homburg" (the group's second single) and nine additional tracks from the period; and a monaural audiophile vinyl LP edition released in 2003 by Classic Records, with yet a different track order, including "Homburg" as the opening track and without "A Whiter Shade of Pale" or "Good Captain Clack". The set includes bonus singles of the original monaural and alternate stereo versions of "A Whiter Shade of Pale". A 2009 remaster by Salvo Records, using the original mono masters, was released, with bonus tracks including the singles "A Whiter Shade of Pale", "Homburg", B-sides and alternate stereo takes. However, many of the tracks are played at a higher speed. A 2015 remaster by Cherry Red Records expands the album into a 2-CD set.

All tracks written by Gary Brooker and Keith Reid, except as noted.
Side A
1. "Conquistador" 2:42
2. "She Wandered Through the Garden Fence" (two versions of this song were released—one with a "firm" ending, not a fade-out) 3:29
3. "Something Following Me" 3:40
4. "Mabel" 1:55
5. "Cerdes (Outside the Gates Of)" 5:07

Side B

3. "Salad Days (Are Here Again)" (from the film Separation, 1968) 3:44

The Vinyl

On visual inspection this vinyl looks absolutely superbe! The vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable! This is the original 1st issue , heavier thicker type of vinyl with deeper grooves only found on these original 1st pressings! They are also more robust than later pressings which were more flimsier! In strong light there are surface marks/scuffs/scratches noted. There is a couple of small but quite deep scuffs which are feelable and do cause some isolated scuff noises when the needle hits these places.

The Audio Quality

I have played this through track for track as usual on a top system at very loud volume using a dedicated mono cartridge, and the audio is rated very clear and vibrant throughout as I heard it with some scuff noises as noted earlier and isolated ticks heard perhapes in quieter places,in between tracks or intros!  Having said that this is still very enjoyable and original. This plays with (no) signs of any distortion or that this has been overplayed inmy opinion! Audio graded at excellent for the most part in my opinion.

Please note! I always make this disclaimer! Please allow for the odd light static/ crackle/clicks/pops as noted earlier in this description cause by the surface marks/scratches/scuffs.  Please remember that this is a genuine 49 year old vinyl (not a reissue) that would have originally been played on a 49 year old system!

Please note! This has been stored in a case for at least 40 years! Any static crackle that might be heard during some quiet parts could be minimised by constant cleaning before each play in my experiance!, Build up of dust and dirt that has accumilated over the years from the vinyl being stored! laying dormant causes most of this problem so please allow for some light static crackle as  previously mentioned! I would class myself as highly critical ! Please look at my completed listings of records that I have sold of this calaber and you will see that I normally get it right!

The Labels

This features the original blue REGAL ZONOPHONE  labels. Features "Sold In The UK....") text across the labels (Only 1st press) "K.T." Tax Code stamped on side 2. (Only 1st UK Press) (no) nasty writing. Spidering can be seen around the spindle hole. This has obviously been played a few times but certainly has not been overplayed at all in my opinion! Light marks seen on side 2.  ''made in England'' text is featured (this is a UK pressing) little if (no) spindleware the hole is perfectly round!  GENUINE 49 YEAR OLD PRESSING!

The Record Sleeve

This is a plain white sleeve without splits or tares! Light creasing staining/fading with age only (see photos)

The cover

The condition of this 1ST ISSUE GARROD & LOFTHOUSE PRINTED, LAMINATED FRONT ONLY  FLIP BACK REAR cover is strong and straight! Lovely and super glossy laminate , Any rubbing ware with age is minimal. Please note! There are minimal laminate creases to talk of at the front. The writing on the spine can clearly be seen! Please note this is the genuine 1st issue  cover (features the CORRECT catalogue number at the rear (see photos)!  This is graded at excellent in my opinion!
