PRINCIPAL EDWARDS MAGIC THEATRE
Soundtrack
Original UK LP released on Dandelion / CBS Records in 1969. Gatefold sleeve.
Principal Edwards Magic Theatre was a 14-member communal performance art collective in the United Kingdom made up of musicians, poets, dancers, and sound and lighting technicians.
The collective was originally formed at the University of Exeter in the late 1960s, and then was later based at farmhouse in Kettering, Northamptonshire. The group was signed to John Peel's Dandelion Records and their single, "The Ballad of a Big Girl Now", was released in 1969. Following the single was the release (under the same label) of two albums - Soundtrack and The Asmoto Running Band - the second of which was produced by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd.
The sometimes whimsical, sometimes epic (verging on progressive rock) writing style of guitarist Root Cartwright, was paired with the eclectic lyrical contributions of David Jones, Gillian Hadley and Monica Nettles, and was performed by vocalist Vivienne McAuliffe. The violin and recorders of Bindy Bourquin were another key element of the group's trademark sound. Lyn Edwards, originally on bongos, took over on the drum kit.
Later, with a smaller nucleus (including new bassist Richard Jones from Climax Blues Band) and a name-change to, simply, Principal Edwards, they recorded a few new singles and a third album called Round One for Deram Records. Most of the Deram recordings were also produced by Nick Mason.
-------------------------------------------
Principal Edwards Magic Theatre's first album was an inspired but exasperating of-its-time affair. The sprawling troupe, with more than ten musicians contributing to the record, was at its best when doing a form of British folk-rock with a wistful quasi-medieval air. That's best heard on the epic 13-minute "The Death of Don Quixote," and also on "Sacrifice," and "Enigmatic Insomniac Machine." To drag in an obscure reference, at times they sound like a far more folk-oriented counterpart to the early-'70s British art rock band Julian's Treatment, another band with a haunting, female lead singer who made much of dramatic tunes with a faintly theatrical, fantastical, storytelling spin. Vivienne McAuliffe's strong quasi-Renaissance balladry vocals (and occasional Shakespearean narration) and their folkier material make this band a worthy footnote in British psychedelic / progressive folk-rock.

PAYMENT
I would appreciate payment within seven days of the auction’s end. If you want to bid on more of my auctions ending a week later please inform me. I will wait and issue a combined invoice at the close of the second week’s auctions.
However, I am no longer willing to carry combined transactions beyond two weeks and in these cases would appreciate payment promptly after the close of the second week’s auctions.
I am sorry to have to introduce these measures – I always try to be patient and allow buyers to bid on extra auctions and / or delay payment. Unfortunately some buyers have been stretching out transactions to unacceptable lengths so I feel I have no option but to limit ‘carried over’ transactions to two weeks.
